I'm currently using PX200's for my 2G 20GB iPod and iPod Shuffle, but mainly the shuffle. I'm awaiting my E4c's in the post so as soon as they arrive I'll have an opinion for you. Should be tomorrow.
I too enjoy the bass for the PX200's and will need to be comparible. What is your source?

I never heard PX200 but judging by descriptions PX200-style "Punchy Bass" isn't exactly the thing of my e4c. Detail, clarity, ballance, neutral sound, tight and controlled (read "subdued") bass, are all there, but not that "Punchy Bass". If you want bassy canals you better look at super.fi 5 pro, e5c or um2.

The bass for PX200 is more controlled than PX100 or Fontopias
Also I have my iPod's EQ set to Rock so it gives it boost for my rock songs, but for Swing, the Bass setting is more tame, but I want more clarity and detail for classic rock, like led zeppelin, and Jazz like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Sorry People if I ask a Lot of questions, but I have quite a big budget, and I don't want to drop a whole lot of money for canalphones that I will find won't satisfy me.

How would the Super Fi 5 pro compare to the Shure E5C

...other than price

More bass, less treble detail. Do a forum search - in last months there're were a bunch of very informative therads about E4c vs super.fi vs e5c vs um2 (pick your pair

I like the Idea of getting clarity from the E4C's, I would like to hear more the sax solo on Pink Floyd's "Us and them" or Jimmy Page's Acoustic on "The Rain Song". I look for clarity but also plenty of tight, but not boomy bass

"Plenty" not gonna happen with e4c at least out of something like un-amped iPod. I'm writting this while listening on e4c to Roger Waters "What God Wants" from iPod hooked via line out to ancient Headroom Total Airhead portable headamp. It's like night and day comparing to same thing un-amped! Even un-EQed there's suddenly awesome impactfull bass and the whole sound spectrum is more "juicy" and 3D without loosing (actually even obtaining) detail and response ballance.

The whole "Unamped" and "amped" thing is very confusing

Although the ipod can drive the canal phones, a portable amp will improve the sound quality and provide more volume if needed. Low impedance phones require less power(wattage/mw) but need more current to sound at its max potential. ipod headphone jack has a impedance mismatch problem so low impedance phones (ex. e4) may sound a little bass shy.

I'm also replacing my PX200s with E4s ... currently waiting for the shipping, cause I ordered the black ones. Instrument seperation is horrible with the PX200s, although they sometimes do other things pretty well. Let's see how this turns out.

Px200's Vs E4C's???

My E4C’s arrived last night and I set about trying the various ear plugs, I settled on the originals. Forget these E4s as replacements for your PX200’s, there isn’t any bass. They serve a purpose and improve certain things but not the bass by any means. Those who have quoted “punchy, tight bass” for these must be listening to woodwind instruments and triangles because these E4s don’t come close the the soundstage, presence and shear thumping bass we’re used to with the PX200’s.
I was standing in the queue for the boat home last night with my PX200’s on and as Moby’s Raining Again remix hit the dance bassline I almost felt like pogoing! It was all I could do to stand still. I thought to myself if the E4’s can do this I’ll be in heaven. When I got home and opened my parcel the first thing I did witht the E4s was skip back to this track and replay the good bit… I was very very disapointed. Like listening to a transistor radio in a bathroom. They just could not reproduce that ‘filled room’ sound the PX’s do. I tried them on the 2G hard-drive iPod and they were even worse. The Shuffle at least goes some way to a full sound.

I wanted to replace the headset to reduce the size of my rig, and to be fair having the tiny iPod Shuffle and the E4C’s is a pretty neat small system and I supose given it’s size it does sound rather splendid, but I’m having to adjust my enjoyment to allow for the absence of that thumping bass I was used to with the PX200’s. This morning on the boat the sound of the twin engines were a distant faint hum and barly audiable while listening to the E4Cs. The isolation was very good and I really enjoyed being able to hear beautiful silence between instruments. While walking though, every step was like thunder. The smooth bass of Massive Attack was reproduced rather better than Moby and I shall give them a chance before I offer them on eBay. maybe I just need to get used to them.

I should have held out for the Super.Fi EBs which will be available in August or maybe the UE5c’s… can cannal phone’s have the same bass as the PX200’s??? I wonder.

I like the suggestion of a portable headphone amp to improve the E4's but this would defeat the object for me which was to reduce my portable system to the Shuffle+buds. If I was to use an amp I may as well carry my HD600's too!
