PSP sound quality: how good is it?

I've only ever used an original/phat PSP - here are my 2 cents.
- SQ is mediocre. Compared to an ipod 5g, the ipod is clearer and less muddy sounding. The Sony A829 I have sounds far better.

- Usability: I couldn't carry the psp in my pocket and had to stick it in a backpack, and use the psp's headphone control attachment to skip songs and lower volume. This setup just felt really awkward to me.

It's usable if you view the music player as part of a convergence device, but I wouldn't expect it to outperform a dedicated DAP.

A few years late but here it is: RMAA PSP audio performance test.
Because PSP output is low, i amplified the output with a FIIO A1 portable amp. It has 100dB S/N ratio so it does not influence the measurements.
I used the line-in of a Asus Xonar U7 soundcard. (110dB S/N ratio)

PSP 3000 series has a slightly lower output voltage but much lower THD.
