yesterdays walk: (link to be placed)

I am pro console gaming, simply due to 'fun', and lack of effort required to make things work.

PC, using Macroshaft Windoesn't, is a hobby unto itself.
Gaming shouldn't require a basis in pc tech troubleshooting to simply avoid microstutter..

so; Playstation vs PC is 'a thing'.

discussion to be polite and positive
angry and 'unhappy with my opinion' posts should maybe go to your own thread- this thread is FOR console gaming (and Portal discussion etc)..

Consoles have an advantage since there's a lot less work involved, good out of the box for most things. I've been a PC gamer for decades, and it can be a rabbit hole of work, tweaking, over locking, Windows updates messing with settings... It's a part time job, even though the modular design allows for upgrades.
A top end PC will always be better, but the amount of work and money isn't a good value to get there. I like the challenge to do it, but consoles have gotten so good these days, it's really not worth the time.

I agree with the simplicity of console vs pc.

Pc has the ability to be an all in one and with multiple monitors ability to multi task.

i haven’t built a pc since 2011. Was planning on it next year it shocked me a bit on how much prices for everything cost. the price point then and now is def miles apart.

One thing to consider not many bring it up. It also depends on the types of games a person plays. Consoles don’t have access to RTS, MMO, and MOBA. and course pc doesn’t have access to console exclusive titles. If a pc port is created for X title the wait could be long. I’m not sure about this also since I haven’t had a console for so long.. does Sony have sales that are similar to steam sales and as frequent.

One extremely disappointing thing I’ve noticed lately is how badly a lot of games are optimized on the PC vs console. Pretty wild one pays maybe 2k + and the fps are pretty subpar w/ a lot of titles released this year.

Took an extra day to upload this (length) which drew out simply because 600Gigabytes of bandwidth has been eaten on 'setting up a console' (with a silly amount of Unreal Engine 5 titles!?), and having 50Gigabytes of PS Portal footage (running PSSR upsampled PS4 titles mostly)..

Forgot to mention that a few titles STARTED getting their PS5Pro patches late at night on launch day (three)... so it looks like over the next few weeks is when we will get to actually see what 'upgraditis' looks like, in terms of upgradddes. (He will find you, even in the future)

Yes is reason for 'PC tech types' to simply enjoy the easier environment to GAME in
Pc has the ability to be an all in one and with multiple monitors ability to multi task.
ah yes the age old 'justify the PC debate; sadly no longer holds muster... A phone can wirelessly hook up to a TV as a screen, using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse as inputs, and is good enough as a portable PC for the vast majority of what the world needs to do (create and consume.
Low powered tablets, can do most of what the masses need, and anyone who is working on a PC desktop for Aftereffects and photo/video manipulation (ie multimonitor/wacom etc) have the actual use scenario for 'complex hardware' setups,.. which PC caters to (and Apple typically net).
i haven’t built a pc since 2011. Was planning on it next year it shocked me a bit on how much prices for everything cost. the price point then and now is def miles apart.
The market is heavily manipulated to reforce sales (PC CPUs being 'outdated' (security) quickly, and not given 'task scheduler' support on Win10 etc)
everything old is 'new' again.. yet, unlike the mid 2000s where PCs truly could boot in 10 seconds or less (and still shutdown quickly), nothing has improved even though we have thrown 10x the spec at everything.
One thing to consider not many bring it up. It also depends on the types of games a person plays. outdated info.
Planet Coaster on Playstation 5, due to the RDNA3 'early z cull' ran in performance equivalent to 6800/3080 on a high powered CPU.
add in game devs having freedom to implement native keyboard and mouse controls (from Call of Duty to Ziggurat 2), consoles have been doing all genres, including those typically strongest on PC (including RTS and online 'group' titles)
One extremely disappointing thing I’ve noticed lately is how badly a lot of games are optimized on the PC vs console. Pretty wild one pays maybe 2k + and the fps are pretty subpar w/ a lot of titles released this year.
PCs in total are not 5% og the games sales market, generally speaking..
Playstation store titles, factoring 8500 games that work on a 'digital only console', get huge saving...
just like the Nintendo Switch, it takes around an hour to scan the sales listings on ANY GIVEN DAY.

All the titles in my video (uploading) generally cost me $1 to $6 (and they are top tier titles like Need for Speed to Soul Calibur), but yes, indies go budget price point as well.
Only thing I miss is the huge amount of VR demos on PC, but a VR2 adapter nets access to them.. (I can play Undead Citadel demo on PC)

Early access titles, eg Greedfall 2 (and previously Baldurs Gate 3 etc) can be seen as an advantage- but then who wants to play 'prerelease RPGs'?
I like my racing games in ultra graphics quality, and the ability to use racing wheels from over a decade ago, then PC would be perfect- if it wasn't for the constant platform jank that removes any ability for the PC to be an entertainment platform (consistent/reliable).

For me, Saturday morning free time shouldn't be haldf lost to PC maintenance, something Microsoft windows platform has become, being highly antagonistic to gaming. (via forced system updates/driver updates and software title updates, which companies like Warner Brothers will use to bury the old product, eg Hogwarts Legacy on PC, right as Quidditch cup launched!)

PC has too many players who need to recoup money annually in that space (from the video card manufacturer, Nvidia, to the platform holder, who counts new PC installs as 'xbox systems')
Console is now, somehow, much much cheaper than PC gaming...
the PS5 Pro has quality near equal to my 'ninja' PC at around a quarter the price (that being said, I like top tier power supplies and 'quiet' builds - that do technically cost more to implement... although the PS5 Pro is sooooo quiet, even under load; it really shows up the value for money proposition of PC gaming.)

PC gaming is 'mods' and 'steam decks' for the enthusiast sectors presently, if media is to be believed...

Games seem to be getting their "Pro" patches after console release... On launch day, in the evening, a couple got patches, and the next morning, Horizon Zero Dawn..

Here are some thumbnails from screen grabbing; most of these were taken on the Portal (HDR off, generally), and pre patch. (Thumbnails; click for detail)

as said; screen grabs (taken whilst using the Portal); most of them were 'too much data' to upload, naturally being the 'better photos', but a few here which may/may not show the upsampling in action.
Horizon/Baldurs Gate and Planet Coaster being the only PS5 titles above,.. the rest are Playstation 1 to Playstation 4 era games, possibly receiving PSSR (the Portal has NEVER looked so good!)

Walk and talk on state of industry; evidenced by history and market trends; how do the Xbox v PS5 v PC contenders really perform..?

is gaming a casual and fun thing for you? PC users really don't get that..
so do consoles deserve bragging rights as 'better gameplay/gaming' boxes?

As a PC tech who can easily maintain a high end platform, PC gaming is often a tiring mess and seldom a stable foundation to launch from... (System updates and game updates and a LOT of market players who need to resell equipment to us...)
Vs the neat and easy console experience., where games are reliable to launch, and time spend gaming is used,.. erm.. 'gaming'... (this doesn't mean much until you look at PC gaming without the rosey coloured glasses on)

Gaming as a high cost in time and money hobby, isn't everything it is cracked up to be.. (on the PC platform); which makes the 'budget' high end gaming option, the PS5 Pro console, a real boon to gamers everywhere...

interesting how different market segments lean on different spec sheet bullet points to sell a product.

2Terabytes of storage was a significant part of the price justification, for me, when factoring trade in deals netting more than 50% of the upgrade cost. (as was a refreshed 'new' controller)

new controller, much upgraded storage capacity and a clean/quiet system, that also comes with video silicon nearly equal to the price point alone if factoring 'PC parts'.

Of course PC ecosystem will hardly let an end user actually USE their hardware -eg constantly updating power plan settings in Windows will auto set your CPU to limit your graphics cards performance in cutting edge software, as just one easy example of why a 'gaming pc' (oxymoronic proposition) will require a time investment on top cash investment, to get what you paid for from a Microsoft productivity platform. Ahem.

Artificial Intelligence /'AI' in a Windows PC (copilot)- is such a stupid notion- I do not have a single windows PC, sans a mid 2000s laptop I keep off the net (and has linux on a cardbus bay drive if absolutely necessary) that hasn't been accidentlly wiped and upgraded to win10/win11 and proven unreliable and impractical for any productivity.

Spending into a higher tier of laptop hardware, without buying more reliable hardware, but still being under a microsoft hierarchical 'we will not allow any other way but ours; equals the most expensive laptops brands and 'reliable parts' being taken out by windows (auto) update.
This cannot be avoided.

My reliability / productivity box purchased to 'get stuff done' (professionally); was taken out by a forced firmware update to the laptops battery.
Lenovo wouldn't acknowledge the problem has existed for six years (or more) and just wanted to book a repair sheet.

They replaced an OLED screen (new), mainboard (new), and USB board) (new), as well as postage across my country (x2) and the technicians time handling my phone calls (hours) and dealing with the store front from where I bought the PC...
Lenovo, due to forced 'hardware breaking Windows updates', was out of pocket much more than half the cost of the laptop. (no profit in selling products with Windows on them; so future laptops get made cheaper to cover 'microsoft as a (bed) partner' costs.
To quote the Witcher: Lenovo got ploughed.

So did I.
Lost all my backups I trusted to upper tier Lenovo (reliable) parts. six weeks of use of a laptop that required me two days to tweak an setup.
Now I have to do it again.
Of course I have ZERO faith in the long term reliability of the parts, and the notion of turning on copilot is 'a joke' to me.
next years laptops built cheaper to 'make the minimum spec' for co-pilot, will break more often due to cheaper less reliable hardware in place.
If the most reliable hardware can be taken out by Windows software, and this has been profitable for them... (sells Surface brand products); future 'xbox "gaming PCs" will do the same thing to the gaming machine market..

They already do, such as Widnows Power Plan will happily overwrite user settings to change the CPU to use 'less than 100%' (desktop PCs on wall power, 'no kidding') and I have seen gaming performance drop framerate massively, within 24hours of a technician (me) tweaking a machine.
Sometimes it is a few days, sometimes it is 'a week', but Windows WILL make you spend a lot of time keeping your machine working as it was YESTERDAY.

Not a good eco system except to learn 'world lessons' (commerce/'snake oil' /PC tech support skill set etc)

On topic: PS5 Pro patches keep rolling out- Baldurs Gate III multiplayer is now in 60 frames per second. (no more headaches)

smooth

I've been saying this for a looong time. Somebody who just wants to play some video games needn't bother with the learning curve of keeping drivers up todate, troubleshooting issues, and everything else that goes into competently using a PC. Video game consoles turn on, and they work. They also have the HUGE benefit that the same game will run the same way on every PS5. No need to tweak settings, no need to troubleshoot. It just plays properly. The absolute only knock I have agains the console gaming experience is subscriptions. I don't feel people should have to pay a monthly fee for access to online multiplayer gaming. Some subscriptions are worthwhile though, like Xbox Gamepass. That's a worthwhile investment I think. What I definitely don't think should be charged for is multiplayer access. Honestly the only thing that's kept me on PC this current and past generation has been the online gaming subscription. I refuse to pay for that, because after a 5-7 year console ownership cycle, I've payed much more to access multiplayer than it cost me to buy the console hardware in the first place, and I feel that is just wrong and not justifiable. In terms of "Buy it and it works" though console is unbeatable.

like many; off USING the equipment means less time elsewhere (/'here')..

This game on the lowly Playstation 5 console is pretty impressive.
I have a PC that is technically more powerful, but play in the console space.
Are the headset haptics, trigger resistive feedback and HDR feature (in the OLED VR2 headset) worthwhile enough to use the VR2 package on the console instead of the PC.

-yes-

but I would hazard, more importantly- the console space 'just works'. No setup hassles, no immersion breaks whilst using, and the total cost of adoptions (console and VR2) is less cost than the video graphics card required to play the game on PC..(at 'improved' settings?!)

less cost AND less hassle > 'improved console versions' of games...

yes- console version of games are improved, on the Playstation 5 console, vs the PC game.
(factoring that framerate and resolution increases on a high end PC doesn't translate to improved game features)
The controller speaker as a point source blends well with a games Atmos audio via a 13 speaker surround setup. (eg the sound of spells literally ripping from your fingers in Hogwarts Legacy). The resistive triggers can deliver such nuances as 'ammo clip is getting low' (firearm is rattling more as it depletes of ammo).. 3D haptics and resistive triggers and even tempest audio are tech that DO exist elsewhere.. (they just do not get programmed for due to lack of customer numbers with said 'matching hardware spec')

Playstation ecosystem offers a real lot.
In my market region a PS5 Pro console, VR2 headset and a PS Portal portable/handheld can be bought for the cost of a enthusiast 'mid tier' video card that may/may not actually run future games significantly better than a Playstation console.. (Ngreedia market tactics aside)
As a PC tech (PC gaming enthusiast) of many decades, I have just about totally given up on gaming PC (as a concept) due to the platform holder, Microsoft, and market tactics they use to attempt to net gamers in their console ecosystem.
Not investing time and money towards nefarious goals is actually super easy. Especially when the cost of adoption is less and the gaming time is more when I 'jump ship'.

I like consoles for power efficiency. You running a pc will have 4090 soaking in wattage at all times even when paused. Microsoft need to standardize power reduction when games are paused

The i9 CPU and 4090 just drawing power while game is running. It's a lot of power draw

Jan 2, 2025 at 4:43 PM Post #15 of 32
well, true.
power efficiency is the realm of EVERY OTHER operating system.

if 'performance per watt' filter was applied to a Microsoft product, such as Windoze operating system.. (an actual metric that their constantly broken Windows power plan settings configuration suggests they are attempting), they would come in absolute last place...-only the janitor would be remaining person still at the track when they finally cross the finish line, too. (distant last place finish).

the fact their power plan reconfigures gaming PC CPUs to not run at 100% (when tasked to do so) is simply to ensure that end users DO NOT GET WHAT THEY PAY FOR, when gaming on PC.
(users need to check they are in high performance power plan and that CPU maximum power state IS 100%, as Windows WILL CHANGE THIS).

caps lock deserved as they will reconfigure end users CUSTOMISED power plans to ensure the hardware doesn't perform well.

I measure my power under load..
I undervolt my gpu and cpu, and then limit max speeds to keep wall power consumption to pretty equal to the Playstation 5 console.

for performance per watt, I cannot touch the PS5 Pro, and under load, using watercooling and six noctura fans, my rig is louder in same conditions.

Console (pro) has vast superiority in metrics that nvidia and intel would love to tout, and cannot.

If only pur parents actually raised us to care about environmental aspects such as this..

Overclocking and 'ultimate performance rigs' can easily draw double the power of a console under full load, and don't offer more gameplay when doing so.

hard to quantify the value when looked at so simplistically.

Microsoft should be VERY AFRAID of 'performance per watt' metrics.
