So as we all know the PS4 controller operates wirelessly to communicate with the console over Bluetooth. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack into which you plug any headphone and you get all + chat audio.

Sooooo I'm guessing it's a stupid idea to plug a hard to drive headphone like the HD 650 or K712 Pro into the PS4 controller jack to get all audio.

In this case a dedicated dac/amp makes sense right?

I don't know the specs on the PS4 3.5mm out, but I'm guessing most likely there are compromises there and there would be issues with adequate power and sound quality. However, if for your headphones you get a dac/amp they won't be compatible with a microphone (signal goes forward through the PS4 -> dac -> amp -> headphones, but not backwards through the chain back to the PS4). You'll need a separate microphone input, which I came across someone trying to do before but ran into complications. I'm not exactly sure how to get a separate mic + headphones to work with the ps4.

Yea driving HD650 or similar from a controller is like buying a BMW M series coupe and filling it with Bud Light and slashing the tires, and then trying to race it :p

Had a PS4, was very enjoyable and convenient driving an HD700 or AH-D2000. HD650 might be pushing it a bit, but it on lower volumes it should be okay. The audio compression codec Sony uses is actually pretty decent, and i found fine for gaming. Prefer my PC -> ODAC using Dolby Atmos for headphones overall, but the PS4 has the benefit of couch and wireless movie watching. :)

I wouldn't use HD 650's for gaming anyway since they're soundstage isn't that big, just used them as an example cause they're one of the highest impedance headphones on the market and if the PS4 controller can drive those then it should be able to drive anything within a similar price range.

I'd stick with 16-32ohm headphones with the controller. The output power must be insanely weak
