Yeah, when I read comments like these:

So how good are the Bose? Both the top-end and the low frequencies are very extended with excellent resolution, even when you compare it to my 120K reference system. In particular, the mid and lower bass [...] is very natural although it's a little too exagerated and could be tauter. Soundstage presentation is excellent and you could hear the placement of musicians clearly in good recordings. Where the Shure E5c presents a more intimate soundstage, the Bose are big sounding, and you could even hear the width and depth of the musical venues in good live recordings[...] They are a steal at $300.

It makes me feel great about them

And I also noticed increasing Shure SE530 bashing around the forums.

The E500 and SE530 are the same earphone - I vote we just all start calling them SE530 to keep it simple.

Shure says this is the case on the website. It seems they wanted to have two lines, the "professional" E line of phones, and "personal" SE line of phones. (of course then they did the "g" gaming phones for some stupid reason, and what the heck is an SCL). They basically figured out how to sell off the old "c" line inventory for $50 below the old retail, while making the new ones for $50 more than the old retail.

So, the put the E3c, E4c and E5c in the "professional" line, and for some stupid reason they couldn't name the new "personal" line SE2, SE3, SE4, or SE5 because it was too close to the old names. So, they must have next looked at SE300, SE400, SE500 since the E500 was out first. But then they musta been afraid that the 00 at the end didn't mean anything more than SE# without, so then some wise marketing guy said, "but, SE310 or SE420 or SE530 sounds better!". Nobody thought to ask, "Then why SE210 and not SE205, and why SE110 and not SE101?"

So, marketing guys get a bonus, because many E500 guys will try to upgrade to SE530 and not notice that they just took a $100 loss selling the old ones just to get a new box with a higher number on it!

Don't be silly.
First off, the SE530 and E500 come packaged with different things, slightly. ^_^ That alone is enough to call them different things, in Shure's eyes.
And frankly, most people on head-fi who got the E500 know it's the same as the SE530, so they will not go out and buy the SE530. The world is not as grim as you would have us to believe.

But I'm pretty sure most E500 owners aren't on head-fi and don't know this.

Yeah, the E500 has been the flavor of the month for a long time, although other phones steal their glory some now (like Westone 3, UE-11 and Livewires

)

I still think they are one of the most popular and most recommended options though.
I wanted to try a pair myself just to see what they sound like and how they compare to TF10 and ER4 and such, but they were €600 here (e500) and now about €450 (for 530 without PTH), so no way in hell I'm paying that.

Plus I'd prolly end up selling them after a few weeks, I think the only IEM I'll keep are the Livewires that are on the way now.
