In our country we have good prices on projects turntables. Im getting really great tube phono preamp but for now ill have to settle with not so expensive vinyl front end. Whad do you guys think on project debut or 2.9 blak or wood. I had one of the first projects like 7 yeras ago which was totaly simmilar to current project 6.9.

Is debut really that bad. Its sub chassis look quite the same as other rather than finish.

Mybe later i would like to get vpi junior or something like this.

thnx for all input in adavnce

I don't think any of Prejects turntables are bad but the Debut only gives an acceptable basic performance. For example wow and flutter is speced at 0.12 % which is a little high but still acceptable. When you go up in the model hierarchy, they improve one or more things at each step as motor, suspension, platter material, tonarm etc.
They are often sold with a pickup, and better pickups for better models that can make the price differences look greater than they are (for the turntable only).
If you plan to keep the turntable for some time and have the money, I think it is a good idea to go up some steps.

The Pro-Ject decks are a great investment. I am currently using the RPM9 with the 9c arm and an High-End Ortofon MC Cartridge.

The sound reproduction from this unit is very good indeed and to my ears is better than the Michell Gyrodeck.

As for the lower end of their range. The Debut is a really solid performer and can be relied on to give superlative results every time. Myself, I had the Pro-Ject 1.2 about 5 years ago and parted with it because i'd picked up a Rega for a little more than pocket money.

If I was going to recommend any Project deck to anyone it would definitely be the RPM4. The RPM4 has a very respectable tonearm which is a slightly cheaper version of the 9c as supplied to thigher end decks. It has a very substantial Acrylic platter and I believe it comes with a 0.5Kg Record Clamp.

Overall, I can't really fault any of their decks because they are all bargain in their respective price ranges.

BTW, the offboard Speed Controller, the Phono Box and the Headphone Amplifiers that are marketed under the Pro-Ject brand for the most part leave a lot to be desired. They do the job but better performance can be found elsewhere for the some outley and often for less.

I personally can not recommend the Pro-ject Debut. I would try to go higher up in the line. I have always gotten very mediocre performance from my Debut and feel decent any cd player will easily beat it's performance. In particular, there is no weight whatsoever to the bottom end of the music. I was unimpressed with it out of the box and, two years later, with the addition of a better cartridge, still regret the purchase. A friend recently asked to buy the table and, as a friend, I wouldn't sell it to her out of good conscience. Pass on the Debut and look higher in the line.

Project Debut 2
When Project launched the Debut turntable in the late summer of 1999, no one had predicted the impact it was to make on the UK hi-fi market. This is a real hi-fi turntable at an incredible price. Simplicity is the key here. Sound engineering, married with modern materials has created a fantastic sounding budget Vinyl player. Available at this price in matt black only. (Comes complete with Ortofon 0M5e cartridge)

You must learn how to read the reviews. Magazines like What Hifi usually make group tests of components of the same price. They get 3 - 5 stars and 5 stars only mean that they regard it as good value for the money. Products costing much more also get 3 - 5 stars.
They usually also describe entry level and high performance product almost equally positive. They review them seperately and seldom compare them.
Rating components is always subjective and you can choose a narrow or wide scale. To take another example the German magazine Stereo rates Clearaudio Reference and Transrotor Eternita and three other turntables costing more than 9 thousand Euro as top references giving a performance of 100 percent. Debut 1.2 gets a rating of 34% and Project 6.9 50%. Of course 100% doesn't mean perfect but the best they have heard yet. In another context you can give Debut 100% and some plastic crap turntable 34%.
I prefer the Stereo way of rating. The ratings are always somewhat arbitrary and subjective and you can debate the ordering of components, but this system is closer to my experience than the price-performance system where nearly all components get between 3 - 5 stars and we have 5 star products costing 50 as well as 5000 Euro.
