Hello,

This may not be the right place, but there is some discussion here that's getting pretty close.

I'm trying to find info regarding audio coming into a PC, and how I might program with it. I know nothing about DACs, and what data comes out of them.

Specifically, I have a very old computer, an Epson HX-20. This can save progs and data to tape, either microcassette (if it's working) or normal cassette. I've been using the normal connectors for external cassette to connect to laptop, and saving and loading progs to/from .WAV files, and this works OK.

BUT, I'd like to go further, and get at the data in the file. This data comprises binary data (from the HX) modulated into an audio signal with framing, etc, then sampled in the computer. I'm trying to work out where the sampling is done (in the DAC ?), can the sampling be bypassed, or undone, and how might I read the original binary data.

I know there is the 'hxtape' system for linux, but the code for this, while relevant, makes use of DAC and OSS facilities within linux (or the sound card ?) so I don't know what that's doing. Plus, I don't have access to linux.

Anyone got any pointers, or know how I might get into programming around DAC?
