Agreed. Here's some Phil Collins-era Genesis. I LOVE this album, BTW. One of the best, most cohesive albums they ever did...

Yup.

No no, not one of the most cohesive albums they ever did. 'A Trick Of A Tail' is the most cohesive album I have ever heard in my entire life. It is the benchmark when discussing flow of an album.

I owe all here an apology. Steven Wilson's 'To The Bone' is not as bad as I thought and wrote. Also, I found a way to salvage a pretty decent Porcupine Tree album from it. If you delete songs 2-3 and 6-7 you are left with 7 songs and 46 minutes of Porcupine Tree lite music reminiscent of 'In Absentia' or Deadwing'. Again, I apologize for ranting before giving the album more listens. I hope for those like me that thought it was a complete sell out to give the edited album a chance as it is quite good.

p.s. The 96/24 from HDTracks sounds fantastic

p.p.s. After deleting those four songs, the flow of the album is remarkably smooth which makes me think the seven remaining songs were the original album with the pop songs bolted on to give it the pop moniker.

I promise this will be my last post about this album :)
I'm glad you enjoyed 7 tracks, I think that if you accept them for what they are, after more listens, you will like the other tracks to some degree too :) "Permanating" can be your favorite "dance" song of 2017 if someone asks :D
Joking aside, in fact because this album is moving towards a more brighter / lighter mood, I especially like "Nowhere Now" and "Permanating", because they are the boldest moves to the new direction.

I also started re-listening to PT's latest albums, from "Lightbulb Sun" onward. Yesterday I listened to "In Absentia" and I thought that someone who had written a song like "The Sound of Muzak", could never be a sell-out. I genuinely believe this is what he wanted to do, and that he would never accept submitting to what the record company would like or ask of him.

Really glad to read someone agreeing with me (it doesn't seem to happen often). For Genesis, it's an under-stated masterpiece at the end of the original Prog era. Accessible and challenging at the same time!

Please, pretty please start a separate thread titled 'The Steven Wilson appreciation thread'

Apologies to all his adoring fans but the obsession with this bloke completely escapes me
Sorry, dude, but it's not likely to happen. You might not get it, but SW has been re-invigorating traditional Prog, Heavy Prog, and now Pop-Prog for a long, long time. There's is excitement in just about everything he does, from re-mastering the Crimson (and other ) catalogues, fine-tuning surround mixes, producing bands and releasing his own stuff.

"The the Bone" is a stunningly brilliant album, easily the equal of Peter Gabriel's "So" (yes, I stole that comparison from Metal Injection).

You can ignore the topic (and me) if you like, but I seriously don't think he should be excised from this thread and limited to his own.

IMHO

Definitely a masterpiece, and the last masterpiece from Genesis (unfortunately).

Interesting perspective. I don't know if I have met anyone that doesn't like SW. But this is music we're talking about, and there's probably a whole anti-SW cult out there somewhere.

I would definitely include 'Wind & Wuthering' and Steve Hackett's 'Voyage of the Acolyte' as the last great Genesis albums. 'Voyage' goes on because as you probably know both Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford played on Hackett's first solo album. For me all the Genesis albums from 'Trespass' to 'Voyage of the Acolyte' are masterpieces. I like some more than others but all are brilliant.

I have said before Genesis was the Beethoven of progressive music. In 48 years since the birth of progressive music with King Crimson's 'Court of the Crimson King' no band has been able to surpass them. Pure lightning in a bottle.

Even I would agree with this!
