Professional vs Home: Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro vs Beyerdynamic Amiron Home

Do you have issues with your current amp? If not there is actually little use to upgrade (imo and ymmv).
With DT 880 the Corda I use it is definitely satisfying to my ears. I was inquiring mainly considering that going "up" to Amiron or DT 1990 I might have found use for a more powerful amp. But to be honest, with the 250ohms DT 880 I feel like I have plenty of power to spare. So you are probably right and frankly I don't even have real "upgraditis". I'm already wondering whether Amiron/DT 1990 would give me that much more compared to DT 880, worth the extra money I'd need to spend on them.

If anybody could measure the earhole on the ear pads of both I'd be very grateful. Trying to understand if they're bigger than DT 880. Thank you in advance.
I guess measuring the "depth" of the ear pads might be harder... but in case somebody can, it could be useful as well.

Its about 6cm

Grey one is from the 770

The not mounted one is the stock 1990 pad

And the one mounted one the 1990 is the dekoni elite velour

Ok, so it's identical to DT880. Thank you so much for going through the hassle of getting pictures and everything. Really, I appreciate it a lot.

Now I wonder about Amiron, as pretty much everywhere I've read about them I read that they were the pinnacle of comfort...

I also have this nagging feeling that neither of these two would constitute a straight upgrade from my DT 880. I fear a sidegrade, so to say...

They are lighter then the 1990 and clamp less

I think an important part is if you listen at high volume or low

Dt 1990 is very penetrative. I mean its for studio use and you don't want to sit for a few hours there and blasting your ears with 80-85 db. But if you listen at lower volume like 60-70 decible. You will miss nothing with the 1990 even hi-hats. Thats why the 8.5k peak is there

The Amiron home instead can be blast a bit more then the 1990 thru the smoother warmer and more laidback signature

Thanks @Cevisi. I see from your signature that you have several Beyerdynamic headphones in your collection. And you stopped at the DT 1990. Do you share DW75 opinion that Amiron/DT 1990 would be a clear upgrade from DT 880? I ask because I see you have 770 and 990, which I believe are in the same "class" as 880.

Pads are different on the Amiron. I’ll measure them. But the opening is bigger. Also headband and clamp is very different.

I used to own a DT 880 about 5 years ago. It is an excellent headphone in that 200 dollar price range. The Amiron Home and DT 1990 are both big upgrades from the DT 880. Just pick what sound you would rather have. If you would like an energic, fast, very detailed sound, the DT 1990 is the correct way to go. If you would like a relaxing and warmer sound, the Amiron is the correct way to go. Of course, if you spend 100 bucks more, you can just skip over both of these headphones and buy yourself a T1 2nd Gen instead. I do not own this, but kman1211 does. He also owns the Amiron, so maybe he can put up some comments about how the Amiron and T1 2nd Gen compare sound wise.

I should mention as well that the 1990, Amiron, and T1 2nd Gen are using the Tesla 2.0 drivers. Any of these 3 headphones is a huge upgrade for you. The drivers used in the DT770/880/990 are not in the same league at all. You are paying about 550 bucks for the DT 1990 and Amiron, or about 650-700 bucks for the T1 2nd Gen for good reason.

Yes its a clear upgrade when the 880 did work for you the 1990 or Amiron home will also work for you

The drivers are also tuned differently.
Are you sure from my knowledge the 1990 and amiron use the same tuned driver. And the t1 t5 and 1770 are differntly tuned

A small info by the way 1990 and amiron home share the same driver

https://www.beyerdynamic.de/catalog/product/view/id/4375/

The differences are only thru the cups and pads
The drivers are also tuned differently.

The drivers are indeed tuned differently. I’ve swapped around the DT 1990, DT 1770, and Amiron Home Drivers in different housings and pads. Each had a different sound despite looking exactly the same and having the same damping and impedance.

I only heard dt880 for a few minutes and i dont like its midrange. Its kind of boring and flat IMO and amiron home is definitely an improvement over dt880 in term of midrange. And i do think all beyerdynamic headphones i tried are very comfortable...

Thank you everybody. I'll wait for @kman1211 measurements of Amiron's ear pads and take a decision.

Edit: how would you rate sound stage on the two?
