If I'm running the optical out from an imac to dac to headphone amp using Itunes, is the slider volume control in Itunes considered a preamp?

No, it's more like controlling the output level of your source. The actual preamp circuit is in your headphone amp.

i wouldn't control the volume out of iTunes. You wouldn't be able to get the bit perfect if you do.

Leave the volume slider at 100% in itunes, and control the volume from your headphone amp for the best possible sound quality

I had the Itunes volume on the first audible notch and I could crank the amp volume right up. I can't turn the amp up past the first notch now with the Itunes volume slider cranked but it sounds better. I guess this applies to the volume slider in the application Call of Duty 4 for best sound quality??
