Major US and canadian cities have lost power. NYC, Abany, Toranto, Otawwa, just to name a few have lost power! I live in central Jersey and I lost power for about 5 seconds. Even newark is effected and there are reports of a Con Edison plant to be on fire. Creepy stuff isn't it. Also, my father is in NYC right now, at work. He may be stuck there for a while.

LOL, sign of the times. But this is creepy. I don't think it's a terrorist thing, but the fact that many cities in American and Canada don't have power doesn't make me comfortable.

Hey, it's always something...

I'm in Santa Cruz, and have lived with the wrath of "Gray-Out" Davis for the last several years. I never know from one day to the next when the power will be off here...

It's the end of the world! Everyone run around in circles screaming like idiots!

I live in South Jersey and the power here is fine.

Surprisingly no one really has news on this yet. Headfi exclusive!!

Well, the closest is CNN which says :

Quote:

BREAKING NEWS Major power outages reported in New York City, other parts of Northeast, Cleveland, Detroit and other cities. Details soon.

Bah. I want details now.

Yeah I'm trying to find out info for my friend who just dropped off his parents at the airport to fly back to NY, and he's busily circling the airport in case they send the planes back..

MSNBC and FOX News are covering it. The local networks in NYC had a blurb but cut back to regular programming.

It's the North East. This is what happens when one large section of a power-grid goes out. The increased loads on the connected sections of the grid causes them to overload and go out as well.

I know this happened way back in teh day. Some of you older head-fiers may remember. The power from NYC all the way to canada when out. It happened in the 50s or so. It was a equipment problem though, not sun related (that's another thread). Although, I don't thing cities like Detriot and cleveland and otawa are on the same grid as us. I want details now. I'm most intrested in what caused this.

It's my understanding that the NE grid is interconnected now for load balancing (distributing more to where its needed). So, I blame a lack of contingency protocols for cases like this.

[edit] And it was 1977 was the big blackout in NYC, IIRC.

Perhaps, oh, I don't know, he was trying to qualm fears about our nations ATC grid not having power?
