Ok, this is a tough one... The very first one was an '98-ish Sony PCDP... then the Nokia 5510 music phone. 64-whoppin'-megabytes! Later on, I also used various Pocket PCs for players over the years... also I had the 1G iPod shuffle twice (still have the second one. Great unamped SQ...). Had the 2G iPod mini for like a week but sold it because the uber-crap SQ (LOD? Amp? I didn't know these words back then). Also had the iAudio U3 for a while - excellent unamped SQ. Nowadays I use an iPod touch with LOD and the 2Move, but I'll switch to a Classic soon because of the higher capacity.

I'll be brave and be one of the few to reach back into the '80's...

In the Beginning = A 7 lb. dictating cassette player I would place next to the radio to record songs I liked....

1982-3 = Giant Panasonic Walkman (or maybe it was a no name "SoundDesign")..but it had decent headphones that I believe were rebadged Koss's

1984-5 = the Original Sony Walkman....it fell apart before it's time like every Sony product I've ever owned.

1985-1999 = Nothing!

2000? = RioVolt SP150...my gateway drug to portable mp3's...

2001-2002 = Archos Jukebox Recorder 20...then upgraded to 40. It was ugly, quirky, and tempermental...but I loved it.

2004 to present = Iriver H140...eventually upgraded to 60, and then joined with some additional H1xx friends as backups.

More amazing than the evolution of portable equipment over the years is the change in attitudes towards how music is appropriated. In the old days, friends and I would buy vinyl together and share via cassette (after all, that's why they sold blank cassettes in stores, right?). Post Napster, sharing music files will get you sued and ostracized....

Don't remember the dates, but the journey is fresh:

iRiver IHP 120 -got stolen and replaced with-
iRiver IHP 140 (since Rockboxed)
then iMod 4G 60GB Color Photo (also Rockboxed)
then iPod 2G 8GB Nano (for Skiing, beach, etc.)
then iPod 5.5G 80GB Video (when I found out that the 6G won't be Rockboxed)
then iPod Touch 16GB for three days till they released the 32GB so I returned mine and got the 32GB (thank you BestBuy).

I really hope I'm done for awhile, I really don't need a reason to buy another player since each of mine has a well-defined job and it does it well, but we are all members of Head-Fi so the journey has probably just begun...

Early 80's - Grade School-Fi: JCPenny's cassette recorder, the big rectangular ones with the built-in speaker & mic, and slide-out handle. Recorded my records and radio songs by setting it next to speakers of whatever was playing and hit record.

Mid 80's - Middle & High School: Sony cassette walkmans (one was a WM-F10... really miss that one

), Lasonic boomboxes, and eventually a Sony D-3 PCDP.

1990's - College-fi: Aiwa cassette walkman and various PCDP's.

1999 - MZ-R70 Minidisc recorder. Still love that thing dearly.

2000 ~ 2003: Various Minidisc and PCDP units.

2003 ~ Present:

- Creative MuVo 256Mb
- Samsung YP-T8Z 1Gb
- iPod Mini 4Gb
- iPod 5.5 80Gb
- iRiver H120

Started off with a Sony Walkman back when Tape Players were in
Then got a Samsung YEPP CD player. Had custom flat batteries so the players profile was much thinner than most other CD players.
Being the Korean that I am, got a Sony MD player. And no, I don't regret it.
And now I'm using an iRiver H10 5GB
I'll soon be upgrading to a new portable media player in the next week or two.

I probably had a bunch of them.

Various portable radios from the 60s transistors radios up to the 90s.

Various brands of cassette Walkmans starting shortly after they came out.

Various PCDPs probably starting in the late 80s or early 90s

2003 - Rio Cali still used mainly for radio

2004 - iPod 4G

2005 - iPod 4G's hard drive failed and I got a new one under warranty

2006 - iPod Video

2007 - iPod Video died a very strange death and I got a new one under warranty

looking to buy a 160GB iPod so I can finally get my whole collection on my iPod.

Close to 2000 CDs. I originally ripped them to MP3 and AAC and that comes to about 120GB. I'm reripping to ALAC for archive and listening from my computer. I've reripped about 550 and that comes to about 150GB.

Then I have about 400 LPs that I want to digitize.

I can get to any CD or LP in a few seconds. All alphabetized, classical by composer or artist or compilation name. All other genres by artist or compilation name.

highschool...sold candy on the bus to fund my Sony Walkman cassette player. It was the model that would "compress" or slide together and without a tape, would be the same size as a cassette case. Used a single AA battery. I would copy the LP to cassette and alas, crappy sounding portability.

I entered the CD era. Sony Discman, with remote control.

I entered the digital era. Rio 500. sounded like crap because only had room for two songs. Hope I liked those two songs.

I tried the mini disc. Better quality sound, could fit 3 CDs on 1 minidisc. was better, but still had to carry around a shoebox full of Minidiscs. I found the need for better headphones. Damn that minidisc player.

All my CDs. 320kbs. My 30g lasted a little over a year. Went to 80g. Get even more CDs on it. You might even find a couple of hits from the 80s on it!
