I am thinking about getting a new camera and wondered what you all thought about the Nikon D5100 as a beginner's DSLR. Too much? Too little?

Assuming you mean reasonably advanced beginner, seems good to me. It's got a lot of features you don't really need, but what doesn't anymore? You can certainly take good pictures with one.

As you may have noticed (well, if you're a freak) I've been working more in the 4:3 aspect ratio recently. And I did manage to provoke something of a sunstar from my lens, though it wasn't easy.

I would personally take a look at about-to-ship D3200 with the excellent 24.2 MP Sony sensor, already proven in Sony A77 and NEX-7 cameras.  It should make a nice camera, not just for beginners, and the price is good at $699 including the 18-55 lens!

I thought about suggesting that, but it seems to me that it might be overkill for a genuine beginner. What would a beginner want with 24 megapixels? Although since it's going to be the bottom of Nikon's new lineup, it appears that everyone is going to have at least 24 rather they want them or not, soon.

Not bad, although I think if you can find an angle where the branches don't clutter the stream so much it would be improved. I don't have an EXIF viewer installed, but I assume this was with some manner of compact camera? At any rate, welcome to the thread!
