Since many of the Hawaii's homes are very small in size, I was lucky to find the house with big enough living room for me to install my home theater setup. It is not ideal but it will have to do until I can relocate back to Texas or other mainland states. It is comprised with Outlaw 990 pre with Outlaw/Adcom power amps. The picture is not very good quality. I hope to get better digital camera in the near future.

Sorry about the big picture size.

Nice Outlaw 990. Mind giving us some impressions of it?

I've always been interested in the Outlaw Pre's.

Well, if you are going to purchase the Outlaw 990, the first thing you got to do is make sure this beast of pre/pro can fit into your entertainment center. Because this thing is huge compare to many other pre/pros out there. I upgraded from Outlaw 950, its previous model and I had to cut out the back panel for me to fit the 990 and my shelf barely made it. It has just about every movie sound processing engine on board with enough of hook ups to satisfy most of the home theater setups. However, it does not have HDMI switching capability, only DVI. This didn't bother me but many people thought HDMI switch was important feature to have. One nice thing about 990 is that it has USB input for firmware upgrade path which the Outlaw already released one upgrade firmware.

What about the sound you said? Well this thing really does excellent job doing DVD movies justice for home theater but biggest surprise for me is its two channel stereo sound capabilities. My previous Outlaw 950 didn't get much two channel music listening from me due to my other two channel only stereo setups was much more enjoyable. However, Outlaw improved its two channel stereo sound of 990 very respectively. Now I am happy to listen to 990 for its two channel stereo setup. And it has phono/MM preamp input if you so desire to hookup your turntable and it does fairly decent job as well. I have two other analog/tt setups so I didn't hook my turntable to 990 but mainly due to lack of space. Since this is head-fi forum, I have to mention about its headphone out amp section. It has dolby headphone sound processor and it does drive quite well all my headphones. I still prefer my dedicated headphone amps but I can live with 990's headphone section if I have to. 990's D/A section is on par with many of the stand alone D/A converters (around $1000 price tag) out there on stereo sound reproduction. When I was looking for upgrade for my pre/pro from Outlaw 950, I was looking into lot more than just Outlaw 990, likes of Adcom, Rotel, Anthem, Denon, Yamaha, Sunfire...etc. But at the end Outlaw 990's features along with very wallet friendly price tag compare to the competitors, it win me over and I am very satisfied with my purchase. Unless there is significantly improved new movie sound processing technology on the market that 990 can't handle, Outlaw 990 will be my center piece of my home theater for a long time to come.

Thanks for the thorough reply. Congratulations on what sounds like a fine Pre.

FYI, last fall I toted my Denon 4306 over to my friends to do a comparo wtih his newly acquired 970. We used a Parasound amp (my denon was used a s a pre) through Paradigm reference speakers.

I'm afraid to admit, but my receiver was bested by the more humble 970. Suffice to say, the 990 has been in the corner of my eye ever since! I also see they dropped the price to $999 - very tempting...
