I was just wondering if there is any CD out there with Mstislav Rostropovich playing Bach's first cello suite ONLY. I would very much like to own this suite without having to buy the entire collection.

Thanks!

Sooner or later, you'll want all six. Better to buy them all now.

(Incremental cost is only $3/suite: $15 for #1 and another $15 for #2-6. Look at it as a bargain!)

I probably will, but in Sweden the complete series costs approximately 50 dollars...that's quite a lot.

(And it feels a little bit stupid to buy the cello suites again, I've already got a cheaper (approx 20 dollars) recording with Lynn Harrell...)

Hey...I have 4 or 5 different versions of Bach Cello suites and I dont even think that's enough. Believe me, Rostropovich's version will not disappoint you...you really want all six! Or I could burn u the first CD (no.1, no.2, no.5 I think)

Good lord! $27.50/disc? And here I thought I was getting ^&%$#@ by the recording industry.

A "little bit stupid" to buy multiple versions of the same work? Oh, no--not at all. The uninitiated may look at us as if we're crazy, but that's the way to go...

I finally bought Rostropovich's 1995 recording of the Bach cello suites... Wow!

Amazing sound, wonderful interpretation that is more dynamic than most. Now I've got 5 versions of the suites, and perhaps my constant search for a better version has finally come to an end.

Maybe somebody could assemble the single best recitals of each part of each suite into a single mega-collection.

But then, I guess that would be entirely subjective...

Yes.... and mixing Jacqueline du Pré with Yo-Yo Ma would sound very strange.

I believe Yo-Yo Ma plays his Montagnana in his latest recording of the suites, and I love the sound of this instrument. Perhaps the instrument is as important as the performer when playing solo...

If you haven't heard Heinrich Schiff's EMI-recording I suggest that you give it a try. It is seldom mentioned here, and I think that's a shame.

Maybe a collection with different performers for different suites would be a good idea... I think I'd take Yo-Yo Ma for the first suite and Rostropovich for the fifth.

What about Pablo Casals legendary performances of all six cello suites from Naxos at $11.99 for the two disc set. Certainly, the sonics won't be as good as some others, but the performances set the trend for what would come later.

Well you guys hooked another sucker, (I've always wanted to get these, but it's always slipped my mind). Here's what this thread led me to order from Amazon:

Bach: Cello Suites Nos. 1-6
Bach: Suites for Solo Cello
Bach: Six Unaccompanied Cello Suites
Bach: 6 Suites for Cello

Not counting the other 8 titles....

Thanks for the nudge!

Which cellists did you buy? If you bought Ma, what version did you get? (I prefer the later one, "Inspired by Bach".)

1) Mstislav Rostropovich
2) Janos Starker
3) Yo-Yo Ma
4) Mischa Maisky
5) Pierre Fournier
6) Pablo Casals, Nikolai Mednikoff

Sigh, I missed a couple the first time, unfortunately the Yo-Yo Ma isn't the version you mentioned, but I think I have enough for the moment.

It'll give me something to look forward to!

I always enjoyed playing these on electric bass, they're pretty simple, but very satisfying. I picked up the bunch of them to hear the range of performances in the hope that one of these days I will have enough time to actually play them again!

"When you are tired of Bach you are tired of life"

With me, Bach just didn't catch on for a long time. I was almost totally into the classical, romantic, and post-romantic periods. I had many recordings, but hardly ever listened to them. Then, suddenly, it hit me. I learned that I had to focus my attention on Baroque music in a different way than other forms of classical. I thought I had ordered 12 recordings of Bach this weekend, but, in fact, I had overlooked a few places I'd ordered from. I really ended up ordering 16 recordings this weekend. And, to top it off, I listened to a ton more, lent me by a friend.
