Rather than leaving just a feed back post for Cesar (Pappucho), I felt the necessity to let everyone know that we have an amazing Head-Fier/MOT in our midst.
I had a golden opportunity to hear Romanee's Portaphile's V2^2 maxed out version on the long plane ride from NYC to San Jose on the way to the 2007 National.
For the first time since I was a teenager, I listened to the Who's "Quadrophenia" in it's entirety sans interruption. I then turned to Rush's "Moving Pictures". I was using my Rockboxed iRiver H-120 (thanks SiBurning) optically connected to a Headroom MicroDac into the Portaphile.

Romanee always had good things to say about this amp but I always dismissed it like Charlie Brown hears his teacher (wop wop, wop, wop wop).
I gotta tell ya, I was floored. This amp has incredible detail and a bottom end that stands tall against the competition. The Micro Amp has a tad more detail, but pales in comparison in bass and treble extension, not to mention size. I can say that now, because Tyll, who is a friend of mine has developed a new line of equipment which betters his Micro line

After getting back from Cali, I asked Bozebuttons to lend me his, which also had a couple of hundred hours on the dual 1500uF Black Gate caps.

Not only is the amp tiny, but this thing really packs a punch. I would not say that it is superior to my SR-71 and Hornet, they are equal contenders, but I am being vocal about this purchase because of the incredible customer service that Cesar provided to me.

I was going on family vacation that weekend and Cesar gave up one of his burned-in units destined for a review to me, so that I could have it in time before I left for my week of beach bummin' in Virginia Beach with the wife and kids.

I received it in 2 days for $249 and have been using it daily, since. I have it hooked up to Vinnie's 5.5G imod and Ken's Jumbo Cryo what-chama-call-it LOD/cable. I am using Apple lossless files converted from my vast collection of .flac files stored on an external HDD.

Everytime I wrote to Cesar, he answer within 2 hours (info about switch settings, battery choices and DC power options) I bought a Radio Shack Walwart with the wrong adaptaplug and inadvertenly broke the DC port by lifting it off the pcb, and as soon as I got back, Cesar told me to send it to him. I sent it Priority and he fixed it the same day and mailed it back to me the same day.

Does it get any better than that?

Not only does Portaphile make a great amp for a great price that sits in an exclusive class of high end portables with our other friends here at Head-Fi, but the customer service is second to none.

Dealing with Cesar was how every Head-Fi transaction should be, and his demeanor and attitude are good examples for everyone to learn from.

Yep. Quite so, Aaron.

Cesar is much under-recognized and under-appreciated, possibly because he's very modest, unassuming, and has never sought to make a splash in our community.

He has always worked more as a true "amateur" rather than a vendor. He worked within his own ideal "audiophile purist" paradigm and took a long time experimenting and improving this amp striving to achieve the audiophile solution and sound that he envisioned. Along the way he took listeners comments to heart in selecting the best/most appropriate component parts.

This isn't to say that our other favorite, more well-known amp designers here aren't made in the same mold, but Cesar certainly deserves respect in this regard.

He's a genuinely nice guy and, though amp building is not his primary gig, he is very considerate and responsive as you noted.

How about re-titling the thread something like "Pappucho of Portaphile Appreciation Thread" -- so other reader's won't think it's an amp review in the wrong forum?

It sounds good. Maybe I like the SR71 just a tad bit more, but the depth portrayal is much better on the portaphile. I have an external battery pack with 8 AAA nihm batteries connected to it like a stack, and battery life never bothered me. With the batt pack, all switches on, it runs long like the sr71, and the extra juice seems to help with overall ease in the sound as well.

Never had to contact for any customer service, but the way it looks, Ill be in for a treat if I ever have to.

Thanks.

Shunyata...
Is your battery pack homemade or a commercially available one? Got pictures?

Romanee suggested a newer rechargeable technology 9V made of Lithium Polymer (not "Ion") which he claims yields 20 hours. I bought 4 with it's own charger from Thomas Distributing.

Charges in 1 hour.

I turned off the Wide Bandwidth switch and keep it in Class A, which makes little difference in sound and makes the batteries last twice as long.

Cesar is a great guy to deal with. His Portaphile V2^2 Maxxed w/ LT1210 and Black Gates is a fantastic sounding amp specially on the bottom end. However I can not stand the fact that w/ alkalines it only last 2.5 hours with the switches on max (except gain which I keep at low).

If Cesar could find a way around the 2.5 hours while retaining the sound he would sell them like hot cakes.

mrarroyo,
The Ultralife battery last 15 hours and the above mentioned rechargeables last 20 and pay for themselves after 3 charges.

It's a home made one. Its basically a 8 aaa plastic holder in a case. The two wires sticking out are spliced with a 9volt connector thing, then that is snapped into the existing 9volt thing through the hole in the backplate that was intended for the dc jack but I just screwed the backplate in rotated. I don't have a camera handy but here is a pic.

I haven't ordered a dc plug/wire assembly yet, but when I get one, it would be much simpler and better looking- basically it will just plug into the dc jack instead.

I used to use the ipower 500mah batteries, but with all switches on they still only give me 4 hours..

OK, so that means with the Wide Bandwidth off, the Ipower would yield 8 hours.

Peter, how do you claim 20 hours? Inquiring minds need to know!

The ultralife costs almost four times what an alkaline sells for. Is the 15 hours w/ the wide bandwith on or off?
