So I am going to be doing a lot of traveling in the next couple years, and I would like a nice pair of small, durable speakers I can take with me for the hotels.. since I can already see the need for them.

Any thoughts?

have you looked at the kensington speaker to go range, the fx300 and the fx500, the fx300 (which i have) is a safe box also, you just select your playlist and zipper it up, and then you can turn off and/or adjust the volume with the volume dial on the exterior, not bad sound, great for the shower/beach/outdoors as its fairly protective too. I have a set of Logitech mm50 portable speakers, that I really like. The mm50 charges my ipod and it also has a rechargeable battery, so you can go unplugged. I also have a Creative travelsound battery power portable speaker that uses a 1/8 patch cord (no dock like mm50). Check out CNET.COM they have numerous reviews on portable speakers.

I have a Yamaha NX-U10. It goes quite loud for portable speakers and has a very respectable sound.

It's quite expensive and runs for only 3 hours on batteries, but generally, I plug it in via a USB plug or straight from a computer which powers it.

X2 on the altec lansing, we have two IM5's. They do need some burn in time...about three days of constant playing as the sound out of the box has harsh trebles and boomy bass...but after the burn in this small package sounds great...charges and a set of fresh batteries actually take a constant 24 hours to wind down...looking at the IM7 or 9 ones now as my kids have appropriated them....buy.com has them for under $50. they sound better than the Kensington units which we have also.

I have the Altec Lansing IM7 (anywhere from $65 to $200) and am very impressed with the sound, especially the bass. Quite portable too. I also use iPod > mini to RCA > Trends Audio 10.1 T amp > PSB Alpha B1 (or alternate somewhat sensitive speaker) and the sound is great. Either of these options would keep you under the $500 mark. Just my .02

I travel with the Logitech MM50. I also really like the JBL OnStage. Both fit very well in a suitcase and both can be had for less than $50. Small enough for easy travel will mean some audio compromises but you can still have enjoyable sound.
