I'm wondering if anything in the way of a portable hi-res, multiple codec, player only exist, such as is the case with the CD transport I once owned and fed directly into my DAC The better hi-res DAPs all seem to include an amplifier and DAC. This seems wasteful if I'm going to upgrade those with separate components anyway. Does such a device exist. Thank you.

An old phone with a lightning to usb cck kit or a usb otg cable.

An old phone can do what you want, find a player you like that acts as a renderer, connect one of rhe above cables to your new dac and amp and off you go.

Alot of folk use old phones for such a setup.

Then just buy some typical phone and then you can use usb cable to your DAC.

Sure but with the proviso that the OS needs to support USB audio

I was recently looking at this player for transport only:

Has no amp and seems to support USB audio output.

Funny I read a Headfonia review on that yesterday. I think it is exactly what the OP is asking for.
