I'm looking for a recommendation for a relatively inexpensive pair of headphones for work. Contrary to what you may expect, I don't want isolation. I need to be able to hear my desk phone ring if it goes off. However, open phones may bleed too much sound. On-ear seems to be about right. Comfort is also a high priority since I work 12 hours shifts on the weekend. I do occasionally enjoy listening to bass-heavy music, but in this case I'm looking for something fairly well balanced suited to many different genres. Since it's work, my choice of sources is limited; either an unamped iPhone 5S, an Echo Indigo IO sound card, or integrated laptop audio. A longish cable would be useful, as I may be moving about my cubicle a fair bit. That said, I'd rather avoid Bluetooth as I don't like batteries or having to charge yet another device up. Build quality is also important, as these will be thrown into a backpack every weekend and get banged around some. Portability is a concern, but not as much as the other factors. In-line controls and microphone would be nice, but are not necessary.

I'd list audio quality as a high priority, but I think my options are limited in this price range. Let's just say I'd the like the best I can get in this bracket.

I bought a pair of TDK ST700s some time ago, and they were OK, but they're starting to fall apart now and are no longer in production. The V-Moda M80 seems to be highly recommended, but may be a bit heavy on the bass. Any other thoughts?

Thanks for the recommendation. How do they compare to the HD 558's? I found the 558s to be too polite and a bit veiled. I love my 280s though.

They have more bass, not as analytical, highs are recessed, and no where near as bright. They sounded good with my tablet and phone, but not with my other DAPs.

If you are getting the vmoda m80s make sure they fit your head because there pretty small. Check out the hsr 1000. Best headphone you can find for $150 also make sure they can fit to. I prefer them over my HD 558

creative Aurvana Live!.  Extremely comfortable.  Even though it's closed over-ear it's not sealed, so you can hear your phone ring as long as your music isn't crazy loud.  It's a U-shaped signature, nice bass and highs.  Very good sound for the price (it's on Tyll's wall-of-fame).  Easily powered by an iPhone.
