What are my options for a portable DAC with optical input? I'm only aware of the Piccolo but it doesn't seem to be battery powered (is there a battery option available?). Then there's the Ack! but it's expensive and doesn't seem to have optical input - and then there appear to be holes in the chassis making it unsuited for portability IMO.

What else?

Piccolo is battery powered. You need 12V, so I use a 10AA battery holder with 2.1mm jack. Considering about 40-45mA draw, it should run 50 hours on modern AA batteries. Of course, 10AA batteries can be considered bulky and a bit heavy so it doesn't fit everyone's definition of "portable".

Well.... eventhough the Ack! is a battery-powered unit, I would not recommend it for "portable" use. It is rather a very heavy unit.... solid! Also the on/off control I would think could be very easily flipped by accident.
