Hello folks.

I don't know if posts like these are appreciated on here, or if there allowed at all, seeing as the info is all available on site. But there's a lot to get through, and having just read through 9 pages of the 'best mp3 player' thread and researching iMods, portable amps and what have you, i'm still at an absolute loss as to what I want from my portable set-up. So, i've a few questions, some of which are probably a bit subjective, but i'd really appreciate any help.

I hate the term, but i'd like to consider myself an audiophile, having spent a lot on my home set-up. But i've never really paid much attention to portable audio at all, since i've never used portable players that much. In any case, i'd like to rectify this since i'll be travelling a lot over the next year and i'll be needing my music to keep me going. Currently i'm using a flash based sony MP3 player - forget the name - but it only holds about 256mb and so i'm generally ripping my music at a low rate and it sounds pretty awful. I've also got a rather spiffy portable CD player, the Phillips EXP7361, which I prefer to use but, needless to say, it doesn't really work for runs.

And so a portable mp3 player is in order. I considered the idea of minidisc players but I don't think they really suit the bill. Basically, i'd like something that can hold upwards of 50gb, I might be able to make do with less, but since i'll be travelling for months on end this year i'd like to be able to carry around with me a large proportion of my collection ripped at a decent/lossless rate. The iPod 80gb seemed the obvious choice but the general consensus here is that the SQ is pretty awful. So I considered the idea of the iMod or maybe a Creative Vision M, but opinions on these seem to differ greatly as well. The iMod is certainly going to set me back an arm and a leg, but if it really is a massive improvement than I may consider it.

What i'm really concerned about is whether there is that much difference between these different options when coupled with decent headphones and a portable amp, or is it all rather superficial? The SQ doesn't have to be perfect, but it'd have to be a lot better than what i'm getting from my MP3 player at the moment which is, to be perfectly honest, very dull to listen to.

And I do have a few more specific questions. Portable amps are completely new to me, do they make that much difference to the SQ and is there a good site that sells them so I can get a better idea of price?

And headphones, i'm looking at the Goldring DR150 and the Grado SR80 - any comparisons, or is there not much in it? I recognise both are cheap(ish) and i'm not expected anything amazing, but i've got to keep to my relatively small budget.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to HeadFi. Watch your wallet!
I can't help you much. I will let the ppl with more experience help you.
But I advice you to tell 'em about your price range, any headphone you want to use and the portable amps you can have at hand.

If you need isolation, an IEM may be what your looking for, and I can recommend the Etymotic ER-4P, which is known for it's accurate display of sound, isolation, and awesome highs. I personally use a zune, which holds 30gb, and has pretty good sq, but no lineout so amping it would have less of an effect as if you were to amp an imod/pod. For now, I am ampless, but planning on building one, but since you seem to need an amp right away, I have heard the corda move is great for the price. All in all, that could cost you $610 and it should sound pretty good.

Amped from the lineout rather than headphone-out, the iPod is hardly awful. Not great, but probably much better than what you have. And it always leaves you the option of iModding it at a later date.

Most people buy portable amps direct from the manufacturers; for a round-up, look no further than Skylab's outstanding review at http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=216903

Portable amps themselves aren't popular enough that any one site sells all the amps, mostly they only carry their own individual amps. For more info on amps, we have a whole section dedicated to them.

I haven't tried the Goldring yet, but I have a pair of Alessandro MS1 (similar to the Grado brand), and though they sound excellent for the price (~$100) I don't really consider them portable cans. They leak a lot, don't isolate at all and I find them a bit bulky. YMMV.

Howdy- my thoughts and 2-cents is to get a 80GB Imod and Xin Reference amp or RSA Hornet. I've owned 3 Imods over the past 2 plus years and 2 RSA Hornet amps.
I'm currently use the XIN Reference portable amp and the battery life is awesome 200 plus hours. I loved the RSA Hornet amps too- the mid's on the Hornet M and early Hornets are great, but the detail I'm getting from my XIN Reference is very good. Both amps are a great choice.luckily I bought my Reference amp used.
I've also owned the IRiver H140 using optical out to Headroom microdac and amped with a LaRocco PRII usind AD744BQ op amps and that was ergasmic! But battery life on the Microdac is a super PIA!! when using AKG 701's but I sold that rig,was portable but not light enough for long walks. My 80GB Imod,Xin Reference amp and Senn PX-100's combo fits the bill for me.

Cheers,
Robert

well, if he wants the amp now, the reference wouldn't be a good choice because of wait times, and according to skylab the move is the best he has ever head as far as a portable goes besides the larroco

if you get the iMod, you WILL need an amp, as you have to use the lineout, and therefore need an amp to control the volume.

the iMod does seem to be the only thing that will suit your needs. The only other thing I can think of is an iAudio X5 with 60gb. You'd have to get one used though, as they aren't being produced anymore. It sounds pretty darn good out of the headphone out and supports FLAC, which is one of the more popular lossless formats.

make sure you fill your 80gb with lots of dark tranquility, amon amarth, wintersun, and various good death metal your parents never wanted you to listen to.

its all very well recorded stuff apparently. and um i used to hate this crap.

oh also dont forget to factor in the cost of the line out cable for the ipod, they get quite expensive. microshar has a wicked one that they claim is the best for 35 dollars which will shoot up to 100 after august 30th.

they have a silver one for a little more, but the braided copper looks stronger.

It gets more and more difficult to choose. I've just spent a while looking at IEM's and they sound like they may suit me better, as you suggest. The problem is that I can't test them and I don't know how comfortable they are, as comfort seems to be where they fail.

The iMod is looking like the best option. I may have to browse the trading forums around here and see if there's anyone willing to ship one to the UK for me. Is there much difference between the SQ of the 4th and 5th gen models, video is nice, but its really the music that i'm concerned about. And i'm guessing Apple aren't going to handle a iMod, what happens if it buggers up on me?

The hornet is looking like the best choice of amp for me judging from the info i've gathered around this site, but i'll do more research before I make a decision about that.

Cheers for all the tips, i've got a lot to look into and keep myself busy with now.

I'm rather new to head-fi, but I can still tell you that vinnie's (the guy that does the iMod) has a legendary costumer service, so you won't be needing apple anymore. And from what I've read SQ of both 4th and 5th gen iMods is really good (I want one)

I'm running rockbox on my ipod and there is an improvement in SQ compared to the standard firmware.

Just my two cents...

You may look into the westone series of IEM's as they are loved for their comfort

Can't seem to get the Westones in the UK, so I might go for one of the cheaper Shure options.

In any case, the info in this thread and around the site has been a great help. I've got a good idea of what i'm after now, it'll be a while before I get the cash together but i'll be going for an iMod and i'll try and pick it up before the end of the year in time for my travels. (The next gen may be out then hopefully saving me a few bob on a 5th gen).

I've got a few more questions about headphones, amps and so on, but i'll keep those to the right sections. Cheers!
