It all depends on your budget. There are good portable amps for every major price point. After you figure that out, head over to the amps forum and run title searches for the price "$100" "$200" "$60" or "portable amp" etc.

Just curious, but what about the EX81 did you feel needed to be improved? IMO it runs very well straight out of a portable, with maybe only the midrange frequencies needing a bump or two.

Welcome to Head-Fi, reaperjim! I've never heard the EX81, but I have the EX-71, and I'm not disappointed in the least with the Pocket Amp V2 from Electric-Avenues. The price is right, the sound is very good, and the portability is excellent. Also, it runs for about 100 hours from two AA rechargeables.
