Haydn’s compositions for piano trio and his pioneering work in the genre of the string quartet are well known. However, he also left a considerable body of work for chamber ensembles that do not fit comfortably within the sonata, trio or quartet category. This release explores some of these early and fascinating hybrids.

Haydn Trio Eisenstadt and Cornelia Loscher (violine), Martin Brambock (horn), Dominik Taschler (horn)

Last night's Friday concert from the NCH Dublin (as usual the video will be deleted in 6 days)

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
Nathalie Stutzmann conductor
Boris Giltburg piano

Brahms Hungarian Dances Nos. 1, 4 and 5 / 10’
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 / 34’
R. Strauss Also sprach Zarathustra / 33’

Principal Guest Conductor Nathalie Stutzmann, always a massive audience favourite, makes her ‘new season’ debut with three giants who pushed music in new and exciting directions. This is, for sure, a concert of contrasts and surprising insights celebrating what it means to feel, to wonder and to be alive. Rising star pianist Boris Giltburg ‘A complete original’ (Glasgow Herald) – shares the stage for the poignant and powerful masterpiece that is Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto.

Transforming the spirit of traditional folk tunes into richly animated orchestral miniatures, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances transport us to the timeless, bustling gaiety of a Romany camp fire to conjure the infectious romance of a life under the stars.

The ill-fated premiere of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto on a freezing late-December evening in 1808 marked his last public appearance as a soloist. A work of startling originality, it remains one of the most remarkable examples of music’s ability to delve deep into heart, soul and imagination.

Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra, its stirring, stentorian fanfare opening immortalised in Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, is an evocative journey from sunrise to night that ambitiously describes the expanse of human evolution in one of the most brilliant, involving and enigmatic scores ever written.
