The PM1 earpads have a felt ring that is glued onto the inner side. I just received the Alternative leather pads (it came with no felt ring), and it sounded much better than the default leather and the velour (both with felt rings).

I want to use the velour for the comfort but it sounds veiled and dull to me. I was wondering if removing the rings on my velour pads would widen the soundstage and improve the treble - as the alternative leather pads seem to have done.

Does anyone know if this changes the sound and whether my warranty is at stake?

If the felt ring is on the earpad, I see no reason why your warranty would be voided. Most of the time, the fabric on the earpads are used to control the sound, so yes, removing them will change the sound. For the better? You'll have to try it yourself.

Thanks for the reply! I've removed the rings and the sound has become a bit too bright for me, luckily they can still be put back in place.
