I've been using my E-MU 0404 USB for recording using microphones and it has worked perfectly that way. But when I connect a line-level or instrument-level device (ex. synthesizer) with a 1/4" TS plug, it's very quiet and sounds static-y and distorted, even with the synth and the preamp up fairly high. It's not a problem with the synthesizer because the synth works fine with headphones or plugged directly into my monitors. I've tried changing the ground switches on the 0404 USB, but that hasn't affected the sound.

I remember a few other people having issues when trying to use the box as a D. I., but if an external D. I. is required, then it doesn't make sense for the 0404 USB to have 1/4" inputs at all.

Sounds like a problem or incorrect setting in the EMU. Presumably you have to manually select mic, line or instrument level and presumably you've selected instrument level and maximised the output level from your synth? What you describe sounds exactly like what you'd expect if you plugged your synth into a line level input (+4dBu) instead of an instrument level input (-10dBv).

If the above isn't the case, my best guess is a fault with the instrument and line level circuitry in your preamp/ADC. If I were you I would contact your dealer.

I agree, but as far as I can tell, there are no hardware or software controls for switching the input type. I have contacted E-MU on several occasions, but their support has been very poor.

I would keep trying with E-MU and I'd also contact the dealer who sold you the unit. I'm sure there must be an E-MU user's forum on the net somewhere. That might be a good place to check out first, if you can find it. You never know, there might be some poorly labelled software switch hidden somewhere!
