Hi, i don't want to steal zemo's thread so i'll start my own, been searching for hours here but still can't decide with the info consumed

I am looking for speakers for my dorm, mainly through a laptop and pcdp/cdp

i don't want computer speakers, in the last hour i've read that they suck, so perhaps bookshelf speakers. i prefer something that does not require an amp

i've read about the Paradigm Atom, and they look pretty good, do they need an amp? and if they do, what kind of amp would be sufficient for it?

i like a price range of 300-400

and also, i'd like the size to be as small as possible, i'll likely have them deliver to my home in dallas and pack them in my luggage to NY when fall break comes

any suggestiosn appreciated, thanks

How about computer speakers that resemble bookshelf speakers, or resemble monitors?

Swan M200s....they are a powered 2.0 speaker set, but are not very small - perhaps 6.5" x 8" x 12.5 " each. I have been extremely happy with the sound quality and have connected directly to my soundcard (Terratec EWX 29/96).

Now sold at Newegg, but they appear to sell out quickly.

Edit: 6.5 x 8 x 12.5 per speaker - probably too large to pack in suitcase!

You may also want to look at Axiom Audio's small speakers. I believe they ship directly from the factory so that may help you in getting them to college. They are often compared to the Paradigm Atoms. There are lots of reviews on them if you search the web. Good luck

Do a google search on these. they compare very well with the atoms. The Atoms would not be a bad choice either

Probably a little overkill but falls within your budget and would be a great sounding combo.

That pioneer amp is wodgy approved, better than some more expensive nad offerings, according to him. See if you can buy used speakers, you'll get a lot farther.

If you can swing $300-400 and want powered speakers, you should head over to guitar center and check out their powered monitors. After you figure out what you like, head on over to ebay to get a deal. Be aware that with pro monitors though, you will need a preamp/attenuator of some type.

That's the best looking integrated I have ever seen at that price range.

I think I will try one with my Phase Techs in the kitchen. Sorry about the off topic running of the mouth.

The "attenuators" are located on the back of each monitor and are meant for matching output levels with whatever is feeding it. You'd have to control each monitor individually, like dual mono, except the controls wouldn't be centrally located, but behind each speaker. You could do it...but it'd be a hassle. You could use the computer's volume control to do it, but that's not very ideal. It's not really how it was meant to be used.

Btw, I'd check out the event tr5 if you're going to check out the bx5. I liked the tr5 much more.

hi guys, i have a couple more questions

i'm getting a m audio sonica to bypass my pos internal soundcard on the ibm laptop, can i plus the speakers directly to the sonica? i understand that plugging headphones in is not ideal

and i might get an airport express for my room, do i just plug the speakers to the airport express and it'll play my itunes music wirelessly?

sound quality is degraded through the wirelessness right?

i am thinking of the swan m200(not friggin in stock) or the athenas right now, the athenas i can just go to best buy and buy them, the swans i have to wait and have them shipped(which is a hassle since newegg ships fedex, and i have a cpo box

Keep in mind you'd need an amp for the athenas.
