HD600s+Custom Cardas XLR cables+Blockhead+Meridian 508.24.

Retail is in the $7,000.00 range.

The bass on this setup could kill a bear. Of course, if you don't use audiophile recordings you can kiss your bAss goodbye :]

**edit**

I didn't see the sub-$100 range part.

Well, if all you want is bass, and don't care if the bass is REAL bass (rather just a fake bloated impersonation of true deep audiophile bass) then you should get:

V600 $60ish

RumbleFX headphones $30ish --these
tend to break apart at the volume levels I used them at. . .

V6 $60ish gives you some mid-fi sound plus relatively good impact

Grado SR60 and bass boost $70ish gives you some warm mid-fi sound plus excellent impact and punch

DT770-250 $130 a bit outta the price range but has ridiculously deep frequency extension even with low quality source players like a portable.

Cheers,
Geek

impossible
I've tried them out of various sources. I always need to turn the vol higher.. be it on the marantz cdp or the creek amp. The hd600 seems to be so power hungry!

that is so strange, because in my case it was the exact opposite!

actually, that was because perhaps I tried both only from nonamped sources (computer, cdp)... technically it makes sense that out of an amp the senn wouldn't be as loud as the beyer as the senn are 300 ohms and the beyers 250...

but the fact that from a portable / computer the senn plays louder implies that the senns are indeed a lot more efficient.

Only partly true. The 280 is actually known for having rather unremarkable (or at least, shall we say, rather neutral) midbass, but very nice deeper bass. In fact, I'm still looking for an easy to drive closed phone that has the 280s deep bass but a little stronger midbass (and maybe a little wider soundstage)....I have a feeling I'm in need of the Ultrasone 650....

The HD 280 Pro are anything but "very bassy."

You need to get the optimus headphones that use one AAA battery to produce rumbling. Even without the battery, these things will kill any of the headphones suggested for bass quantity and impact. My brother owns the sony v700's and they are lacking a bit in bass impact. Also if the porta pros are anything like the ksc-35's then they arn't what you need.. any headphones with battery enhanced bass or "super enhanced bass" are probably just what you need.

RE: 280 Pro's

Well I don' t know if I'd really call them BASSMONSTERS but depending on how you have them on they have very deep impactful bass. I ran a Boston Acoustics bass test on them and I could feel them more than hear them. It really depends on fit though, if you hold them slightly away from your head they have pretty much no bass at all. When you have a good seal though... WOW great bass response. Personal opinion, they show very well what's there, on very bass heavy stuff the bass is loud, clean and impactful (and it'll vibrate your head) but on stuff that's recorded with very little bass you won't hear very much bass...

Anyway, I still find them a bit on the uncomfortable side, but the isolation makes it worth it.

sub-100$ bassmonsters?

well, sportapros and v6 come to my head first.

v6s are really heavy on the bass, sound like ****... you'd like them

sportapros are a tighter-fitting version of the portapros, and have even heavier bass.

have fun with either one of these phones, i know i won't.
