Hi, I am new to Head-Fi and I have some questions about the Sony D-311. First, do you need the remote to operate functions such as megabass? I find it cheaper to purchase the machine individually than to purchase the whole set. Second, what's the price range on a used Sony D-311 as of now? I have done a search on this, but I know prices flactuate from time to time. Thank You and nice to meet you all.

Welcome to Head-Fi and sorry about your wallet. I own a D-311 but don't use the remote or megabass. IIRC you do need the remote to activate the megabass function. As far as the other functions (play, stop, pause, etc.) you won't need the remote.

As far as price is concerned last D-311 that was in excellent condition with remote, earbuds, AC adapter and functioned flawlessly went for about around $185 on Ebay. As you have mentioned prices fluctuate all the time for vintage PCDPs, it all depends who's in the market for a certain model during the time of the sale. If no one is after a particular model when one comes up for sale, then it can be had for a reasonable price. On the same token if there are a number of buyers who are showing interest in getting a certain model and are out on the hunt for one, then prices will skyrocket. You could say timing is everything.
