My brother who art in London facilitated the delivery of a Stax OM2/SRM717 system to myself. He has a pretty extensive vinyl collection and has a baby on the way and I can foresee his enjoyment of music severely curtailed on the near future.
I would like to repay his kindness by putting together a head rig for him to enjoy. He plays (allegedly) the electric guitar so it’s entirely possible that he will use the headphone for his guitar amp as well; please bear this in mind when making your suggestions.
The list of gear I have that I am prepared to part with follows:
Headphones: DT880 (2006); HD650; W1000; RS1
Amps: PS Audio GCHA; XCan V3; ASL MGH MK III DT
Your assistance is greatly appreciated, thank you.

How about the Sennheiser HD-650 and the Xcan V3? In my experience, most of the "uninitiated" like Sennheisers the most. Some like the Grado, some don't, it's more of a gamble.

X2, specially if you do the mods to the X-Can V3 as per PinkFLoyd's website.

scratch the 650 off that list... unless he likes the sound of his cabinets with a wet blanket over them.

RS1 + a warm amp would be my suggestion.

LOL! x2... Remember, he's a guitarist... How about some Allesandro MS-Pro's?

The RS1 certainly does justice to guitars, my only concern is the comfort issue. One of the reasons I am prepared to part with them is that whilst I like their sound with bowls I cannot wear them for longer than about 45 minutes before my ears start to hurt. Comfort issues aside, an ASL/RS1 combo with a Raytheon 5751 output tube looks to be a good suggestion, I tried it earlier this evening, Santana-Abraxas, sounded wicked good.
To those that have made gear suggestions of non listed stuff, I am trying to put together a rig for him from gear I already own that for one reason or another does not get much air time from me.

I'd say give him the RS-1 and X-Can v3. It's a very pleasing combo

Agreed. HD650 + X-can v3 is a super all-round combination.
But I might add: RS1 is also a very good combo with X-can v3, and I think maybe for guitar the RS1 could suit his taste better than HD650. It also depends on his taste in music. If he mainly plays rock, RS1 may be the better choice for him.

Thanks guys. I am going to send him the RS1/XCAN V3 combo. I wonder if we will be commiserating over his deceased wallet in about three months from now.
