Ok, I found this forum by accident. very interesting, I never knew people were quite this intense about headphones. I have not used headphones since my first cd walkman and the headphones were awful, so I never used it except when I was in vegas playin video poker. Now, I just bought a nomad jukebox 10gb and I like the idea of having all my music with me when I go somewhere. The problem is the headphones are not loud enough, or of good enough quality to get the most of my music , which means I will use it for a week and put it away like I did with the walkman.

Needs: Volume ( I like loud music, I have 3 pair of polk sda's and a jl audio 12w4D4 sub in my house)

need 2 : It cant be too tinny or bright ( after too many years of cheap car stereos played loud, my ears do not like treble as much as they used to)

need 3 : It must have some decent Bass

need 4: I dont want to spend any large amount of money, My nomad only cost 75.00 after rebate, so I was thinking under 50.00 for headphones

Ok, I realize that my budget may not get me anything really good, but will it get me something I will be happy with for now?

I listen to 60's , 70's rock and even some disco, 80's new wave and rock, 90's thru today pop and rock with a little R&B

I just like loud music that sound good.
What do you think my best choices would be?

Thanks
Judd

For cheap headphones with good base, the Koss KSC-35 is always a solid reccomendation, you can get them at www.headphone.com. They cost 30 dollars.

As for being loud, be careful, because of the nature of headphones, it is much easier to damage your hearing with them.

BTW, congrads, you're the 4,000th member.

Judd,

Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry bout the wallet!! (Standard greeting here!!) You basically limit yourself to some used cans for that price. There are a few made that won't hurt your ears but they are slightly above your price point. Here's the short list:

Sony V6 $80
Grado SR60 $70
Sennheiser HD497 $70
Beyerdynamic DT231 $80
Koss Porta Pro $49

Rough estimates on cost as that varies quite a bit from store to store!! You can, and should, look here at the for sale section for other cans at great prices, so have fun!!

Those aren't available any more. Koss discontinued them.

It's probably been six months since they stopped carrying them. That's a very long moment.

They did? damn, and they were great cans too, i should walk a few blocks to bitch at them.

Anyway, at that rate, the porta pro's are nice, and with a discount code (617A i'm thinkin', anyone know it for sure?) at koss.com, you can get them.

He doesnt want bright cans, so scratch off the Sony V6 and Grado cans. The portapro's may be the way to go, not bright at all.

I am also new at searching out some quality headphones for portable and home use. I recently bought 3 different headphones that I am very happy with.

Sennheiser HD-280 Pro's Tiger Direct $70 with $10 rebate. These are low impediance, easy to drive, great isolation
and comfortable enough.

Sony V-6's DJ Mart $80. Same characteristics of the 280's, a little brighter, less isolation.

Koss Porta Pros Koss website $25 50% off with code 617A. Very bright, no isolation, easy to drive. Worth $25 with a lifetime guarantee, but they dont compare IMO to the V-6's or the 280's in construction or sound quality.

In my experience, I would spend the extra dollars and get either the V-6's or the 280's. I think in this price range both are the biggest bang for the buck. I wonder if others would agree

indeed, with the code, the Porta pro are still now at 31$ shipped to 48 lower states. Good match for you I think, I've these and they're really nice, perhaps too open, they let the external sound to come in a bit too easily. They don't let too much sound go outside in the other side. But nice bass, really comfortable, cheap, loud volume if you want to destroy your hearing .

Damn, how long as Koss had that going on for now?

I really dont want to destroy my hearing, but I would love to have close to the same levels I am used too with the 80's polk Sda's 1C's.
I just want to enjoy listening to this nomad jukebox and the way it sounds now is not good enough to hook me.

Do the stock buds NOT sound loud enough to you?

Coz in terms of loudness, probably none of these cans will be louder than stock earbuds...

But if you think stock buds aren't loud enough, you really need help

As for cheap good cans recommendations, try this http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...&postid=239032 if you're feeling brave

The stock buds sound like crap and the lack of volume would never work on an airplane and thats where it would be used the most. The way they sound now I would just be using the nomad to send the music to a real stereo at a party or to the head unit of my car stereo (these days I have a good one). I would like to feel like I am home listening to my stereo, rather than listening to a cheap fm radio.
