Anyone ever use an older ps2 or any of the new thin ps2's as a sound source?

Do they suck?.. haha

I assume if they didnt people would use them. I have both the larger one and the thin one. Just wondering because it has an optical out.

How about:

PS2 Optical out -> MicroDAC -> MicroAMP -> HD600

Works temporarily?

Would work well, does great for cds alone, but it's rather annoying in that unless it's hooked up to a TV (no display).

Yet, with a remote alone, and relying on the beeps and knowing what track is where on the cd, or just jamming in the track # on a a sophisticated multi remote can do the trick. I got that big sony monster touchpad i would hit tracks in like that... yet i rather have a display output.

I'm using the dej2000 i just got as my make shift transport now, and it's alot more conveniant. PS2 transport is good if you need something in a pinch, but it's really not the best way to go .

I havn't tried it as a transport into a dedicated DAC but using the in-built DAC and Blaze RGB cables (they come with two Phono audio outs too) I found the sound to be very noisy (hiss) and unbearable.

That was going into my Harman Kardon 610.

That said, the same leads or the digital out into my Yamaha VS-10 surround amp produce no hiss...

Well... considering it's a gaming console, meant to play games and not meant to play CDs, I'd really guess that it would be pretty awful. Even for how much the PS2 costs today, a CD player could be bought in the same price range that would be much better in playing media.

Thanks everyone. I was only wondering because I have a TV and a PS2 hooked right next to my computer. So it might end up being convienient one day.

If you take the optical to a DAC or something of the sort... i'm sure it sounds good... as long as the other equipment is good.

Pretty much they're saying that you shouldnt use the PS2 for Analog out. I think.

The fan in the PS2 is really noisy too. I have to shut mine off just to hear my stereo in peace. The Slim PS2 doesn't have a fan, but I've heard that it can overheat after a few hours of use because of it. No experience with that, just something I've heard.

Well, i can vouch.

THose claims are exageraated, but the transformer can warm up a bit...

I've had mine on all afternoon, no big deal.

It's a great makeshift transport, but for dedicated i'd consider something like, even a portable dvdplayer/ pcdp with optical.

I've been using an older PS2 for dvd's...it afforded me time to build an HT system until finally I broke down and improved my movie watching with a dedicated dvd player!
