No. 1 on the list, by far, is dogfighting, hated or disliked a lot by 81 percent of the public, according to a poll conducted by the Sports Marketing Group in Atlanta. Makes you wonder what the other 19 percent were thinking.

No. 2 is pro wrestling, legal but farcical and more than a little trashy. That's also its appeal to those who love it, though more than half the nation can't stand the sight of steroid-pumped madmen slamming each other around the ring — fake or not.

No. 3 is bullfighting, a sport that Americans who haven't been to Spain or Mexico or read Hemingway don't get, never see and, apparently, don't want.

Then there's pro boxing at No. 4, loathed by 31.3 percent of the public. Need we say more than Mike Tyson and Don King?

The sport I hate the most, by far, is the bullfighting in Spain and (I think) Mexico. It's not just the bullfighting, but the "running of the bulls" (correct me if that name is wrong). The people let the bulls run out in the streets and torture them by repeatedly throwing things at them and stabbing them with spears and swords until they die. I can't believe people would actually do that. I hate everyone who has participated in that. It is sick and disgusting.

maybe the running of the bulls, and bull fighting is symbolic for something we don't understand about the culture of the people who participate in such events?? i dunno?? regardless though, IMO, i think it's sick and sad to slowly torture and kill something(let alone an innocent animal) until it keels over and dies a painful death...all for the fun of it?????

i was just wondering of anyone knows if they eat the bulls once they're dead???

I consider Pro Wrestling to be part soap opera part performance art. Pro Wrestlers are athletes but no one should think of wrestling as a sport, at least I hope they don't.

As far as the Bullfighting, I used to LOVE bullfighting as a kid (from Spain and Mexcio), but they stopped showing it on US TV long ago

From Wikipedia :

"Bull fighting (Spanish tauromaquia) is a kind of spectacle whose variations are popular in Spain, Portugal, some countries in Latin America, and in the south of France. Bull-fighting goes back to ancient Rome, when many people-killing-animal events were held as a warm-up for gladiatorial sports. The event's earliest roots are probably religious."

"Very occasionally, a particularly resilient bull will be spared."

"The Portuguese version is conducted on horseback and does not involve injuring the bull."

"The aesthetic of bullfighting, which is regarded as a deeply ingrained part of the culture and an art in the countries where it is practiced, is based on the interaction of the man and the bull. Rather than a competitive sport, the bullfight is more of a ritual which is judged by its aficionados based on artistic impression and command."

"A number of animal-rights activist groups undertake anti-bullfighting actions in Spain and other countries.

However, these views are not widely understood in the countries where Spanish bullfighting is practiced; the argument is that bulls are bred for the ring, live well before they are killed, and if the bullfight went, the bulls would too. Furthermore, part of the artistic impression of a corrida is based on the "cleanliness" of the kill; prolonged suffering is regarded as part of a very poor performance, and experienced bullfighters are able to avoid it."

The Encierro aka the running of the bulls

This is part of the festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain.

It is thought to have originated as a commemoration of the death of Saint Fermin, who was martyred by being dragged through the streets of Pamplona by bulls.

The Encierro involves running in front of bulls down an 825-metre stretch of cobbled streets of a section of the old town of Pamplona.

A San Fermín pedimos, por ser nuestro patrón, nos guíe en el encierro dándonos su bendición.

("We ask San Fermín, as our Patron, to guide us through the Bull Run and give us his blessing.")

The bulls are NOT killed during this event!

I'm surprised that Rooster Fighting (don't want to use the real name, as I understand strong language is no longer appreciated on these boards) didn't make the list. They may only be birds, but fighting to the death is still not very nice.

I'm also surprised these extreme strong man fighting competitions don't make the cut. Looks way too injurious to me.

I'm still waiting for televised executions and human sacrifices on Fox. Shouldn't be long.

Calling a rooster a **** is not "strong language." Just like calling a four-legged pack animal an ass and calling a guy named Richard by the nickname Dick are not strong language.

oh, you meant pro wrestling as in that hulk hogan crap, right? at first i thought you meant the wrestling they do in the olympics.... took me a minute to understand....

most hated "sport" to me?--well, i know i won't be popul;ar with this one................. but i would say baseball. i think it is the dumbest "sport" to have been invented. all i see are a bunch of overweight overly-serious kids talking and spitting while waiting their turn to whack at a ball. nothing sporty about it. now, as a game for people to play, i have to admit, it's pretty fun. i've played like everyone during recess in grade school. but to call it a "sport" is to undermine the real athletes in the world.

(and golf ain't no sport either.

)

you know, i guess it all comes down to what you define "sport" as. i define "sport" is a game that is dominated by physical prowess, at least just off the top of my head. yes, there are physical elements of baseball and golf.... but heck, there is a little physical element in chess too, and everything else in the world. when the top players of such a game would not qualify to be physically in good shape, then it's quite easy to say that such a game is not a "sport."

KR, that's all very interesting news about the running of the bulls.

I don't hate baseball but one thing really gets me mad about it. The money. The people hit a ball, throw it back and forth, and run around for millions of dollars. It's crazy how much money they get just to have fun. This also goes for a lot of other sports.

The only reason they are paid so much is that people are willing to buy advertised products and pay exorbitant ticket prices to watch them. Most are not paid millions if you check the payrolls for any major sport. A few of the real stars have multimillion dollar contracts. But look at big business and how much CEOs make. I would like to see how many of us could even stand the rigors of traveling as they do in baseball for 7.5 months of the year.

Yeah, in the 30+ years that I have been playing there are moments that it is definitely MY most hated game. Then, I hit a sweet 8 iron to three feet from the pin from 150 yards and I love it again. Strange, isn't it?

If the definition of "sport" is physical strength and prowess, then I would probably agree to a point. What it is is a combination of the mastery of hand/eye/body coordination (which is difficult to do on a consistent basis at the professional level), stamina and endurance, mental toughness, and strategy. Whether it can be defined as a "sport" is a matter of opinion. I am of the opinion that it is a small part "competitive sport," and a large part "the hardest freakin game that I have ever tried to play."
