It's almost unbelievable that there would one day exist an MFSL Pixies anything, let alone an SACD of Surfer Rosa. Yes, we'd all probably prefer an SACD of Doolittle, but for now, we'll have to make do with this.

You've complained and whined that there is no Hi-Rez versions of anything that would appeal to anyone under 30 years old. Well, here its is, an SACD of unbelieavble quality of a band that is way off the beaten track.

OK, I guess that for many a 20 year old, the Pixies is hopelessly old-school. I accept that (*groan*), but most of what you listen to now (you "indie-rock" wanna-bes anyway) has it's roots in this music. Nirvana has its roots in this.

Even if you have a top-level system, this SACD will test the limits of it. MFSL has done it again, even if now they are trawling in unfamiliar waters...

Buy this SACD.

Thanks for pretty much the coolest news I've heard all day. I'll have to track myself down a copy.

do you own it? it sounds like you have it. unfortunately i can't get too excited about it, because Doolittle is just so much better, and has such a better track list.

i'm 19, and i would say the pixies still sound very fresh in light of a host of "modern" bands. a few of the tracks belie the 80s influence, but not in a bad way really. i like the 80s quite a lot, and it's a shame i didn't get into the pixies earlier.

I like Surfer Rosa, better than Doolittle. The songs are more raw, the band is more loose, and it is nowhere near as slick production-wise. Great album. Great sonic range, it must sound amazing in "Super Audio."

Sorry. Can you fill us in on what "MFSL" is? I'm interested in this SACD, but would of liked doolittle.

MSFL = Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab

I would have preferred Doolittle too, but this is still good

MFSL is an audiophile label that remasters select albums, usually putting them out on gold CDs (occasionally SACDs). They make some of the best sounding CDs you'll ever hear, and they really hit a home run with Surfer Rosa, it sounds incredible.

I have this SACD version of MFSL and I think it is one of the dullest and worst remasters they have ever made. I do not have SACD player though so my experience is with the redbook layer only. Then again I guess the original masters are not that good anyway...

Interesting. Two, very diverse perspectives.

Would either care to elaborate, or anyone else chime in on their impressions?

I think maybe if someone is expecting a typical ear-bleedingly compressed modern-style remaster, of course a Mo-Fi purist approach is not going to work for you, and it will sound "dull". Maybe he's expecting it to be LOUDER?

It's a fine recording through my gear and a stellar SACD.

"Surfer Rosa" is my favorite Pixies album. I always like them best when they were a little off the cuff and rough around the edges. They're an eight track band, and SR shows them at the top of their powers.

Edit - I change my mind by listening to the SACD again - sounds great IMO.

Anyone know if this is being released on vinyl? I would pick that up. Even though they're pricey, the very few MFSL LP's I have sound amazing.

Thanks for posting about this markl...I've been kicking around whether or not to get this one, and this pushes me over the edge.

BTW - I do wish they'd have done Doolittle...but maybe if we all support this effort, that will be next??
