I just built and will be repairing a Tangent Pimeta. (see my "big oops" thread.)

What gain should I be using for a pair of Senn HD-580, 300 ohm, headphones?

Gain tends to be a personal thing. It also depends on your source and how loud you listen. If you search you should find quite a few opinions. A gain of around 3-4 is good for me. Some people think the stock gain of 11 is good.

As bg4533 said it is personal. But I'll tell you what I have found.
My source has about a 1v output or so. I'm using HD-600s with pimeta that has a gain of 8.5 and I feel like it is too high. I'm probably going to change the gain to around 5 when i finish the amp.

While using a gain of 3 or 4 should be fine with the AD8620/10 opamp combo you may want to consider going higher if you think you'll want to experiment with opamp rolling. Some chips, like the OPA637 for example are not stable until a gain of 8 or higher.

My 0.02,

Thanks for the advice.

The only source i've tried so far was my iRiver H10.

I guess I'll have to hook it up to the CD before I decide on the gain.
