Size, cost, time used. Its an amp, not a fashion accessory. The tape is a neccessity - when you remove the hinge bump the clip is attached to, your'e left with a gap in the metal on the back, which has to be covered up somehow

That's a nice looking rig, great photos also....

I had the XM4 with the 'WhiteCat' Upgrade for a while it is a real nice sounding amp!!

thanks everyone! i couldn't have assembled such a great looking (and sounding) kit if it wasn't for this forum... although i probably would have been happy and richer in my naïvety with my old dinky shuttle and standard earplugs

i will post photos of my rig soon but can't wait for your opinion about my rig; is a sansa e260 (rockbox + 8GB micro sdhc class6) a DIY cmoy and Igrado's i play only wav and the sound is very good, i listen the same music as in my home rig
(E-MU 0404 // Super charged DIY Cmoy // Grado 325i ) and the sound is very similar (obviously the home rig have a space image and a bass superior but i can't take the bus with mi desktop pc... XD

coming soon will be a custom DIY LOD and amp (either a used iBasso P2, used Meier Corda 2Move, or brand new iBasso D3 Python - depends which one I can get my hands on...). also looking forward to a bigger capacity player, perhaps an iPod Video or Classic.
