Long story short I've been fooled into buying "gaming" headsets pretty much all my life. My last purchase was the Astro A40 set with the Mixamp Pro. After buying the headset I was forced to buy a sound card that supported Dolby Digital Live... enter the Sound Blaster Z, great little sound card for sure, so great in fact I returned my Astro A40's due to SBX Pro Studio sounding better in games then Dolby Headphone (imho).
That's when I started to Google alternatives for gaming headsets and stumbled upon this site. I started reading some reviews and a few posts and did some learning. Couple days later I was in my local Sam Ash and picked up the Samson SR850 which oddly enough came with velour ear pads instead of pleather. One word; WOW. I have been deaf all my life. I'm hearing things in music I never knew were there. I'm hearing sounds in games I've played for a while I never knew existed. I have been converted over into the world of real headphones, and it didn't even cost that much!
Just a quick couple of questions and comments regarding the 850's;
They sound great. The bass was a little low at first, but just a little EQ tweak fixed that. Burn-in seems to be working as well. Comfort wise they aren't bad, but not great. Are there any mods/tweaks I can do to improve the comfort? I think the cups are just a tad small for my ears. I have been keeping them placed over the box they came in the last few days while not in use to try and soften the clamping force a tick. Overall I'm happy with these. Music sounds really good and they absolutely rock in gaming with my Sound Blaster Z.
Thank you Head-Fi!
