The contenders are to be plugged into the Pioneer 800c DH base unit.

1. Denon ADH2000

2. AD700

3. AD900

4. Sony MDR F1

Don't consider cost differences, only sound quality, and comfort.

I haven't tried any of those headphones but I think you might want to add the Sennheiser HD25-IIs to your list. Out of all the headphones I've tried with the DH unit (Stax SR-001, iGrado, MS1, ER4p, HD25) the HD25s are the best for whatever reason. I believe the reason is the algorithm was developed in a studio so the surround effect is optimized for headphones that would be used in a studio. I could be wrong but I've searched before and others tend to corroborate this.

Just a consideration.

haven't heard any of the headphones listed but i'd say anything with decent soundstage would probably work great

so far i've only tested my sennheiser EH2200s with those everything but the center channel audio seemed perfectly positioned the center seemed to sound more like it was coming from my forehead but i've always found the soundstage on these to not be that great... going to have to try my other headphones sometime especially my HD580s

if you have the setup for 7.1ch lossless from bluray i recommend 3:10 to Yuma for testing the scene where they attack the stagecoach at the beginning and the end of the movie are both great scenes for this

Wouldn't the impedance be a factor? Since those receiver unites are usually not targeted for headphones; can they drive high-impedance headphones?

EDIT: Nevermind those headphones are all 35Ohms or lower.

I'll throw in another suggestion. Goldring NS1000 noise cancelling headphones. They're absolutely stunning with Dolby Headphone - it's almost like they were made for it. Without Dolby Headphone they sound a bit lacking in the soundstage department though. Noise cancelling also introduces some slight hiss.

Most cans I've tried with Dolby Headphone on my Xonar D2 sound somewhat artificial, or introduce some sound artefacts that break the immersion. The only others I tried that sounded natural enough were the HD600s. The NS1000s run a lot closer to their full potential without an amp though.

The Denon ADH2000's I've read aren't great for gaming. The AD700's may not fit well on my pinhead. The AD900's supposedly aren't great for gaming either. The MDR-F1's leak the most. Ok, how about this question.

Do the AD700's do anything better than the Sony MDR-f1's considering I want these for BOTH gaming and movies?
