Will this cable degrade the sound substantially?
For example if I were to use an iPod->3.5mm to phono convertor->Firestone Cute amplifier->headphones, would i experience a loss of sound quality?
Thanks for any help, and could you please do your best to describe why, if indeed it is a bad idea to connect a rig with this method.

The main difference is essentially that of one more contact point created in the audio chain.

If you can hear the difference (assuming the adaptor quality is decent) you have a gifted pair of ears. I can't.

You might want to check out the IPOD dock connectors that convert to both a mini plug or a mini jack. There are several manufactures. The line out on the IPOD is actually very flat. The headphone jack begins rolling off at 150hz. If you are using a docking station, some add noise because the line out is unshielded and with the electronics some of the docking stations have, they can get pretty noisy.
