Just curious how many of you guys here use your phone as your main audio device.. I know a fair amount use a dap as a main at home and portable device.. Ive been using my lg v30 everyday for months as my main at home for streaming tidal etc and have been happy. Im not seeing a huge reason to drop hundreds or thousands for a home rig just because my v30 seems very fine... Anyone in the same boat?

I don't have a home system. My V30 has been my source for a while. I prefer private, intimate listening. I find it more engaging and stimulating. That being said, I purchased my 1st DAP. I can see more or upgrading in the future. I was searching for a DAP that has a little different sound signature than the V30, so I went with the entry level Shanling m2s, which offers a warmer sound opposed to the V30. When I upgrade, I want something with a balanced output. I own 7 pairs of headphones for the same reason - they all sound a little different.

I used to use my phone (Galaxy S9+) as my source on the go connected to a Chord Hugo 2, but now I only use a non-specialized PC at home as my source (still using a Hugo 2, higher end devices like the Singxer SU-1 and Pink Faun High End Audio Bridge make no audible difference with it to me). No more portable listening for me...

I prefer to play music through my speaker system, but when I want to shut the world out I use my V30 over my Topping D3, Pioneer HP output or mh PC's HP output. The V30 is so much better than my other HP options.

I've been using my HTC 10 mainly, even when I'm home. Sounds better than my iPod 160GB classic.

At this point I can't justify a home setup. Though I'm still in the process of getting a portable dap. Reason is not power, as my phone only needs maybe 1/3 volume for me to be comfortable. I want the 2.5 balanced, and different sound signature. Also my phone has random sdcard problems.

As a student, my set-up is pretty minimal. Have had to use my phone despite wanting to upgrade. But, I've always tried to get a phone that had above average audio. Started with the HTC M8, then went to LG and now I'm on the S9+ (slight downgrade but needed the better battery life). So, definitely doable but, like everyone else, would want to upgrade as soon as I can.

Bizarre use of limited financial resources.

You paid somewhere near 400 bucks for a phone that overall is lightly superior but sonically is inferior (which is our main focus).

Ah, got you. Completely agree that it's a downgrade in terms of sound. That's why I'm looking to buy a dedicated DAP in the future.

To put it in more context, the LG broke and wouldn't boot up. Luckily, it was near the end of the contract and I was able to get a really good deal on the Samsung. Luckily I don't pay the monthy cost directly and it was only about £100 upfront. Sadly Vodafone don't have any LG phones anymore so that wasn't an option.

But, I still agree. I'm planning on getting a DAP to avoid using the phone as my main device. Currently looking if something comes up at the right price.

It could be carrier-subsidized and it has a camera for anything short of serious photography on top of being a music player. It's like if 20 years later he's on a car forum and he says he wants a fast car, but he can only have one car for having other uses like groceries, touring with his wife and kids, and a daily driver, so he buys a BMW M5 or Audi RS6 or Tesla Model S P100D and you'll say it's a bizarre choice over a cheaper Lotus that can't load his kids, will have his wife flashing the bellhop whenever she steps out of the car, and can be a total PITA around town all because your focus here is absolute performance.

Maybe you can get yourself a portable dac/amp. So that you can stream music from your phone
