Hello Head_fi

Im not normally the kind of person to ask questions on forums but here goes...

I have been longing to buy some descent iem's for a while now and finally come to two earphones to choose from. I listen to a whole range of music from Dubstep to Classical to rock etc.. I like the phonaks due to there good reviews but also conscious that they are rather neautral sounding. when I want to listen to music I still want it to come with a kick, I am not going to analyse every note! Then there is the shure se215's. I like the fact that they may sound more lively than the phonak but worried that the sound quality may suffer!

The Phonaks have three different filters available that can be used to tune the sound signature to your liking. The grey filter is rather neutral and flat, and may be a little boring to some ears. The black filter provides more bass at the expensive of the mids, turning the sound sig into a V-shape and increasing the fun level. I've never heard the green filters although they seem interesting, since the grey filter doesn't have enough bass to my ears.
 
I can't comment on the SE215 because I haven't heard it before.
 
Also keep in mind the SE215 is a dynamic IEM whereas the Phonak PFE is a balanced armature IEM. I've never heard a dynamic that could masquerade as a BA nor vice versa, which means that the driver type imbues a certain set of qualities to the IEM. In other words, dynamic and BA IEMs have generally unique characteristics that you may or may not like. Personally I'm a big fan of BA for the speed and clarity they generally have; dynamics have great texture, bass, and soundstage but are a bit slow and sloppy on transient edges (especially cymbals).
