Philips SHE3580 IEM review--how can something sound so good for $10???

Got them!

It's almost offensive how good these sound for 10 bucks!

       I NEED HELP THOUGH ---

I'm entirely new to IEMs.  These are the first I've ever paid for.  For me, the tips on these (all three sizes) are all but unusable.  It's hard to get a good seal and keep a good seal.  And if I do, I can only stand to have them on for a couple of songs before they become very uncomfortable.    Is there somewhere to buy high quality tips that would work with these?  I just can't use these as much as I would like right now.

Try moistening the tips a bit with saliva before inserting them. it takes a while to get used to using IEMs.

I find that the Panasonic RP-HJE450 for example fits very well, since it has an oval nozzle and ergonomic shape.

Try some comply T-400 tips. You compress them before putting them on and they then expand to fit your ear canals. One of the easiest to seal tips.

Also try pulling back on your right ear with your left hand (arm wrapped behind your head) while putting the earpiece in with your right hand and vice versa for the left ear. I get a deep and consistent seal this way, it's recommended by etymotic.

And how would you compare this to the klipsch s4/4i? And also the Sony MDR-ex 600 and maybe the Vsonics GR07?

sorry, the only high end phones I've heard other than the ER-4P are the Sennheiser HD580 and the Sony R10...

The ER-4P are collecting dust now partly because they're broken again and partly because I couldn't get them to sound better than the SHE3580 by enough to be worth the hassle of bringing out such expensive phones and struggling with its deep fit (for some reason I often got an uneven seal such that the bass on one bud sounded louder than on the other side).

Dsnuts thinks his CKM50 sounds better while I think my SHE3580 sounds better.  It's your call

I made a comparison between the two phones in terms of frequency response when playing back sine tones on my computer:

The CKM50 has a more V-shaped response.  They also have a bigger driver on a dish, which provide a nice buzz around your ears when the bass kicks in but may be uncomfortable if you have small ears.  I can keep them on for one hour before starting to feel a bit uncomfortable.  The SHE3580 I can keep on indefinitely...

I see, just thought such a cheap 'phone being on par with the most accurate 'phone in the world is quite an achievement.

But I would put the sound of the SHE3580 (or indeed, many high quality similarly-priced phones) with the best custom parametric EQ as described in the OP well above the raw unaltered sound of the ER-4P. This despite me being quite blown away by the sound of the 4P 10 years ago.

I see, have you tried converting it into the ER-4S?

I love these SHE3582. I started my search for something to replace my Zune 30 earbuds a year ago when the foam covers broke. I limited myself to local Target, Bestbuy and Wal-mart stores so I could try and return until I found something good. My budget was under $40. Last year I tried about 4 or 5 random brands and models and promptly returned them, giving up and replacing the foam covers on my Zune 30s.

Finally the wire broke on the Zune 30s this year. I tried another 4 or 5 brands and models returning them all in disgust. FINALLY! I tried these SHE3582s for grins and to play on my lunch break. But wow, they put a smile on my face instantly. I never got around to upping my budget to try one of the $100 range phones, so I can't compare them to anything but the typical department store phones. I could not believe what I was hearing out of these things so searched for reviews and found this thread. Good to see my ears aren't decieving me, others gree, these are awesome!

I may search for some of the tips recommended in this thread as they tend to slip out of my ears, but I have a long cable run with some tension in it, may try an extended cable to relieve the tension first.

Sound-wise, I tend to boost the mids and mid-bass a bit with an equalizer. Otherwise the highs are just a tad too bright for me and the very low bass is a tad too heavy. Not a real problem, I just gave up on my zune and play through my laptop with an equalizer.

It's difficult for me to find a pair of these earbuds in my country, suggestions anyone?
