So I have a question about this being paired with a pair of K240 Studio's. I want to know if these will work fine and improve the AKG's, because I also want to be able to use them with my IEM's, when used on my computer. So tell me how would this be, and I can't really see the diff. b/w the Penguin and the Royal amp...please help me

wait i'm also missing, how this connect to how and where and what not....I'm such a noob at full-size headphones and amps. Also, where does is the plug for the headphones and the player/computer jack? I only see one I think, but doesn't the amp have to connect to the player to the amp and the then the amp to the headphones?

The Caffeine has a low gain switch inside for IEM, and works great with IEM or HD600 on high gain. There is a second switch inside for bass boost on or off.

The Royal has neither switch, but still drives IEM and HD600 equally well. It has bigger caps that are the same as in the Hornet non-M, and it took 300+ hours to burn in vs 70-150 hour. Despite no bass boost, the Royal's bass seems to sit between the Caffeine without and with bass boost.

I don't see an advantage to the Royal over the Caffeine Pro, although I have a fondness for big finegold caps and the extra heft

The Caffeine's caps are still generous but hidden under the circuit board.

The input is to the left of the volume knob, output is to the right, and charging jack is inside the case so you flip it open to charge. When off, the Caffeine doesnt pass sound, while the royal does allow unamped sound to pass though so you can A-B compare.

one last question, you said charging jack. That's only for rechargeable 9V's right? Also, how much does a 9V last, approximately in hours? Oh and does the Penguin amp come w/ a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable so i can hook up my ipod or computer to it? If not I already have an older line-in cable from my cowon player.

I get 70-80 hours from an non-rechargable Duracell, and 12-20 hours from a NiMH rechargable, depending on volume and bass boost. I have a 150mah Radioshack 9v (avoid), a 200Mah Nuon, and bought a 4 pack of 250Mah Tenergy brand for $10.99 + 9.50 S&H on ebay.

It comes without a cable. He'll sell you an interconnect for $3.95, but I would recommend the $39 USB DAC cable that I am cuurently testing (for review) if you plan to use the computer. So far, right out of the box the DAC cable IS a subtle improvement over the built-in soundcard in my Macbook, and I am still burning it in with my Headsix amp (<18 hours).

Stay tuned

BTW, his charger is a much better deal than a radioshack charger and tips, for $13.95 I think, and we know it works and will be safe. I bought one with my last order.

I'll stick the the double-sided 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable that I have...one because compatibility w/ vista is a b***h and because I'll be using the iPod too.
