Source components can recreate recordings with pretty much completely flat response 20-20khz.  Distortion of all types may have a zero after the decimal point.  Cables connecting them do even better.  Pre-amps or DACs or however you deliver your signal to the amplifier can do the same.  Amps can put out huge power at nearly as good a low distortion flat response even into some pretty difficult speaker loads.  Speakers can mange flat response of +/-10 db in room with distortion sometimes in the single digit percentages though often double digits at higher spl and lower frequencies.  Some speakers don't quite manage this, but some do.  So I don't know, what/where one would make a significant improvement in sound quality.  Does anything really stand out?

Like what, for instance?

Better speakers / headphones
Equalization / room treatment
DSPs / Multi channel sound

Every one of these can make *real* "night and day" improvements.
