I had kw close my last thread, which had a NY Times article on it. The article supported both sides of the cable debate, but the "pro-cable" people took it the wrong way and thought it was an "anti-cable" one-sided article. There was much confusion so I had the thread closed,

Anyway, I am worried I entered Headfi "Neruda Headwize Style"

, and that I made a bad first impression.

I don't know about you, but who was fighting? I think we just want to keep confusion to a minimum so we can improve people's understanding rather than obfuscate it.

I found the article interesting. Although not truly related, it reminded me of an experience I had a few years ago with a stereo shop in Manhattan. They had just started stocking a rather expensive and unusual looking s-video cable -- I think it was a Monster, that made a few outrageous claims about removing digital artifacting or something to that effect. I asked the clerk if he thought the cable made a difference. He told me of course, that he's "seen" the difference. When I asked him to describe it a bit for me he said that they had the cable hooked up to an oscilloscope (or something similar, can't remember exactly what he said) and saw the greater bandwidth.

Needless to say, I purchased their entire stock.

After 30 years as an audiophile I have learned that the cable is every bit as important as you want it to be. No more, no less. If it is a real differance that can be measured, or a placebo effect, the end result is the same. My advice- do what makes you happy. Go enjoy the music.

(Still) One of the best (and classic) books on Acoustics, had the following to say:

"It has been remarked that if one selects his own components, builds his own enclosure, and is convinced that he has made a wise choice of design, then his own loudspeaker sounds better to him than does anyone else's loudspeaker. In this case, the frequency response of the loudspeaker seems to play only a minor part in forming a person's opinion."

It is called Beranek's Law, and can be expanded to cables, CD pads, non-resonant feet, and etc.
