PCDP's are still made, if not at the same range (and quality?) as 10-15 years ago.
A quick search relieved these:
Amazon.com: COBY MP-CD521 Personal MP3/CD Player with 120 Second Anti-Skip Protection: Audio & Video
Amazon.com: Sony DNF430 MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman Portable Compact Disc Player with AM/FM/TV/Weather Digital Tuner: Audio & Video
Amazon.com: Sony DFJ040PSBLU CD Walkman Portable Compact Disc Player with Tuner: Audio & Video
Amazon.com: Panasonic SL-SV590 Portable CD Player and Headphones (Blue/White): Audio & Video
Amazon.com: Panasonic SL-SX480W Portable CD Player, White: Audio & Video

OK, that's great news . . . . . . but which PCDP are you referring to?
Got a Link?

I'm not sure what function a PCDP has these days, especially at those prices. There's no reason that lossless files on a good DAP should sound inferior in any way, and it's a lot more practical arrangement.

I use and recommend mid-1990's vintage Panasonic PCDPs. They all have line outputs and the built-in headphone amp is actually quite strong. The sound is on the warm side. They are actually made in Japan, something you rarely see nowadays, especially with cheap electronics.

I see them regularly listed on eBay for $10-20 shipped. Search "panasonic portable CD player" and look for model numbers SL-S160, SL-S162, or SL-S165. I have all three and they are essentially the same player.

If you haven't seen it, there is a current eBay auction for a mint Panasonic PCDP (model SL-S160) at a $14.99 starting price. That is cheaper than the "Coby" junk that Wal-Mart/Best Buy sells for $30.

Here is a pic of mine connected to a decent amp...

As for other brands, I don't have any first hand experience. I read in addition to Sony, older iRiver PCDP's are also good.

I am sorry, but this is horribly misleading. The particular Sony D25 they're selling is not considered the best PCDP ever made. It is just advertised to be that way, and for nearly $300, there is plenty more opportunity on eBay.

@ ILikeMusic

The line-out on my DCP-150 is in every way superior to the 4G iMod, so I can honestly say, a good PCDP is not inferior to a DAP.
