I have been reading posts about PCDPs and just had a question or two.
Why do you want no skip protection?
What is the difference between the old ones and the new ones thats makes them a hot commodity among the audiophile?

Simple. The older ones have much better sound quality (dynamics, extension, soundstage, depth etc) and are louder than current PCDPs.

Old one used to be expensive and put quality component in it that drain batteries fast.

to give an idea of the price look here It a google groups in the 90's with 90's money value. They are all $250-$500 with an average of $300.

Then the marketting department found out their were making much much more money if they sell pcdp with cheaper material and extra extended battery life. So they concentrate on look, light weight, battery life, features and compromise the sound quality because mass comsumer simply don't care.

Now the new market trends is toward iPod and such so PCDP don't get much interest.

Since no one answered about skip protection,
When the player reads ahead and stores music for the anti skip, it compresses the music, one can usually hear the difference in quality.
