There we go! Also, Religion and GP's really opened up the game. I'm still a warmonger, but there is something to be said for carpet bombing missionaries or running a specialist economy to lightbulb techs. There are so many options and strategies now. The game keeps getting better.

i love war ships and i find it fun to just flood the seas with them, and just stop any vessels landing, and send the aircraft carriers out for softening up the citys before the tanks role in

i love this game, so open, play it lots of times and always different

and its so damn hard! unlike crysis, which was so easy

i lost many many hours of sleep to Civ 2, 3 and Alpha Centauri. Raising a kid got in the way of me ever trying out Civ 4... but man I loved those games.

Anyone ever play the meatspace equivalent, Diplomacy? That was a great game, especially when the house rule was that everyone had to be high.

Especially if Montezuma is next door...

I see you like Island hopping. If forced, I'm old fashioned continent kind of guy. However, lately I go random for leader and map.

My current favorite leader is Justinian from BTS. He has taken some flack, but I love the Spiritual and Imperialistic combination. Out city spam the AI early and kick up commerce through religion to fund it.

I watched myself get older playing Civ 3, so my bias should be clear. My family was late to the PC game compared to most of my friends, so I only really got to play Civ 2 on a buddy's laptop. Between 3 and 4, however, I have to give my vote to Civ 3. Civ 4 "fixed" a lot of the gripes that I had with it's predecessor - most notably the aeons-long end-game, but changed so much in the meantime, that it just felt too different. Lots of good things to say about it, but my preference is what it is.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone played Civ: Revolution for any of the consoles? I know it's effectively Civ Lite, but man, did they ever get the formula right for a quicker, but still rewarding experience. My only gripes (keeping in mind it is what it is) are that the opponent civs are generally a little TOO war crazy and the diplomacy options are abysmal. Of course, that probably upped the mass-appeal.

I never played her much, but I love her and Gandhi as a neighbor for easy pickings and a couple of holy cities. Yeah, maintenance will kill you if you're not careful. As a general rule, I never let my research slider dip below 80%, unless I'm doing something crazy with specialists. That means cottages, cottages, and more cottages.

This thread is heading for the ether. Anyone else want to chat about Civ? Favorite leaders? Maps? Strategies? Tips?

Favourite Civ for me tends to be the Japanese. The bonus food from water squares and some of the early game unique units are usually enough for me to get a good head start on the basics of defense and building production, and work toward my preferred victory: Culture. I'm a defense fiend, not much of a warmonger (too much micromanagement for my taste, oddly).

Speaking of micromanagement, anyone play the tabletop version? I've been thinking a lot lately about how I miss spending a Sunday afternoon with Civ, Catan, Axis & Allies, etc. Admittedly, however, the Civ tabletop edition was way, way too convoluted. There have been role playing game campaigns with less stat management!

catan? i understand and love that game but axis and allies is a bit much. diplomacy? would love to get back into catan or diplomacy if anyone plays. it is far more fun with friends, alcohol and funny hats from what country you represent than playing on a computer screen.

glendale: you play diplomacy? please say you do. otherwise i could compromise and play axis and allies with you in return for a good afternoon at diplomacy. catan of course is always welcome: i used to play that in sweden till like 4am with my mates and even made my first break and enter in order to play it

Never played diplomacy, actually. A friend of mine had it, but we never managed to play (anyone else we had games with preferred the military strategy games).

But I'm always up for a games night. I'm right with you: There's just no substitute for playing directly with friends while having a few pops. I'll warn you though, I'm dastardly when it comes to alliances and backstabbing.

[EDIT] Just noticing that Diplomacy is a military strategy game. I must be mixing it up with another game? Looks a lot like Risk, actually (and presumably pre-dates Risk, too). Sadly, it appears to be out of print at the moment. You have a copy of the game?

extra food from water, thats pretty handy on the maps i like, and u get loads of money from them, its just really slow to get stuff built if u have a lot of water, but theres always specialists!

i love how complex it is, city view, top, let, right, bottom border, its overwhelming at the start lol
