I just receive an e-mail from paypal it seem that there is a class action settlement. It seem that it open to

All Persons who opened a PayPal account during the period from October 1, 1999 through January 31, 2004.

Excluded from the class are any judicial officer to whom the lawsuit is assigned; PayPal and any of its affiliates; any current or former employee, officer, or director of PayPal; anyone who resides in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, or United Kingdom; and all persons who timely and validly request exclusion from the class pursuant to this notice.

$10 million settlement

Here a page from DOJ edit: Site not include or related to the emai.l I found with google. Then went to the US DOJ and made a search with their site search engine.
http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/moe/press%...ly/paypal.html

The e-mail has a link to https://www.paypal.com/settlement/ to register and make the claim

So what do you think?

At the time when I had received that same email, I didn't have the time to carefully read thru the entire email and thought that it was just another scam. So I ended up deleting it, I'm still not sure if it's legit.

From the settlement site they ask for your name, address and phone Also the approximate date of your paypal account activation. I don't see how they can scam with only info that can be found in the phone book. And have a written certification send by regular mail.

The settlement money will either be transfer directly to your paypal account or they will send you a check. When it the court will finalise. The deadline is in october.

Not looking at any content and just at the links, it looks pretty legit. The .gov domain is reserved for government only and the paypal link is a secure link. No weird typos.

if it's real, we might be able to buy a happy meal with the settlement money

Hmm.

The DOJ website says that PayPal is settling a $10m claim due to allegations involving illegal offshore gambling activities.

Meanwhile, the settlement website mentions a class action lawsuit regarding something called the Electronic Fund Transfer Act.

From a very brief overview, these two things don't seem to match up. I would wait for more information before giving these people my personal information.

It's real, do a google search and you'll find all kinds of verification. Even http://www.paypalsucks.com/ has it on their front page. Looks like I joined too early to get in on the fun though...

just log in to paypal and look at your history. do a search for as long ago as you can to see if you joined between "OCTOBER 1999 AND JANUARY 2004"

However, I would wait out before signing or filling out any forums. Remember the deadline is October 23, 2004. So don't jump the gun and do something you might regret.
