Hello all. I've decided I need to invest in some speakers to compliment my HD-595's. Right now I'm trying to decide what route I should take given my circumstances. Budget is around 200.
I already own a decent vintage pioneer receiver that has been powering a very old pair of KLH speakers that need a refoam. It's not a high end model but I enjoy it's sound and the phono stage is relatively neutral through the line out. I also own a turntable and listen to vinyl often. Because of this I've been considering devoting my entire budget to a nice set of passive bookshelf speakers, something like paradigm atoms or the Polk rti series. Used is a route I'm willing to go down, and vintage finds are viable.
I mostly listen to music through my computer and iPod though, which is why I'm wondering if I should just get something active for the convenience and portability. I've been looking into Swan d1080's, audioegine A2's, M-Audio bx5a monitor, or similar. Eventually I'd think about adding a sub and using them for my ps3 and blu-rays as well. The problem is I'd still need my pioneer if I wanted my turntable.
So which option will give me the best sound for my money? I listen to mostly classic rock, with a lot of everything else thrown in. Not much of a basshead, on most low end speakers I find it boomy and muddy. I'd prefer tight bass to thump. Most important is probably a warm sound with good soundstage and instrument separation. My collection is mostly mp3s, so something too revealing probably wouldn't work. Any help would be great.
