he was kind of pissed that I spent $140 on headphones, he asked if i have the money for headphones and I said yeah. and thats it. so now I don't know when i'm going to be buying my next pair.. but i cant let them find out. anyone else buy headphones behind their parents' backs?

I think here its mostly behind wives/gf backs. Just be honest with them, and explain why you want to spend your money the way you are.

Never had to hide it. Back when I was 15-16, my dad bought me a pair of AIWA headphones which I loved and used for the following 5-10 years. Now that I am earning my own money (and the known fact that I only use a small portion of my earning for this unique hobby), he is happy for me.

It would obviously be a different story if I spent at this rate when I was still in high school.

Regards.

Not knowing your age or home situation it's hard to say anything helpful. Are you basically a good kid, ie: not defiant, bratty, do your chores without being reminded, etc.. There are a lot of factors that can color your parents reaction.

Or he might not be able to tell the difference and thus totally backfire.

EDIT: Okay, I gotta ask: How do you like them, and what are you amping them with?

my dads kind of crazy about music too, he spends lots on stereo equip. but not so much of a headphone guy. his stuff is real nice though he has onkyo amps and stereos, huge khl speakers, and jbl subs and such. I really like them but I havent amped them yet since im working on a wooden amp case for my pimeta. the only thing is they are not that loud un-amped.. is it because its 80 ohms?

Music is a better hobby than pot or booze. If they don't understand that, it won't matter what you say. Don't sneak them though. If you convince them you enjoy the hobby, you might convince them to get you this stuff for your gifts. Put on something your dad likes and let him listen to them. Good luck!

Wow, this thread filled up fast. Take the hps to his system and have him throw some music on. Show him how weak they sound and suggest an amp might do magic for them.

He may think you're too young to become audiophile? He want you study rather than falling love with headphones? He knew how much he spent on his hobby, so he don't want you do the same thing? He is not able to accept the concept of "like father like son"?

Anyway, you're entitled to have your own headphones when you bought it with the money you earned. But it sounds like you have to deal with his stiffness. So, find nice explanation that can justify your purchase. Just don't say anything about "my alternative to drug" stuff or your "grand plan to get a beefy amp", for that will bring you a kick in the butt or two.
